This is the second time we’ve been here in two years. It's on the end of the main street from the town. Easy access to lots of parking to be found. This building is across the road from the church stands out like a classic English pub in the middle of nowhere but with that Maine charm. The restaurant is clean, modern but isn't lacking in pub charm with a large bar in front, dining room and tables outside for that beautiful sunny day.
Depending on the weather, the day or night if the restaurant is busy wait time can be long as people linger around talking, not only can the wait time be long but the kitchen really backs up when it’s jam-packed, so you might have to wait a little longer than average for that starter to arrive, but it is worth the wait.
Lots of items to choose from on the menu, I went with the standard issue French onion, rather than the lobster bisque. I didn’t regret it. The cheese was correct and light crispy on top, so many restaurants don’t use the right cheese, Mozzarella is too stringy and wrong I often have to wind it around the spoon into a big ball. But this cheese was just right with a beautiful piece of bread below it, plus overall great taste.
Next up the classic fish and chips which was fresh, nicely coated, crispy, which they gave me a generous portion of. Paired with malt vinegar, a little lemon and ketchup made for a great lunch. I avoided any dessert, but they have many great options which my family took advantage of.
Great place for families, kids of all ages. They even have board games there as well. I ended up playing uno with my son which we haven’t played in...
Read moreLocated at a very busy Rt 1 intersection in Newcastle, I'd recommend that you might consider eating indoors instead of "al fresco" on their patio because of the traffic noise. We were there on a beautiful sunday afternoon. The servers were hopping as the restaurant was filling up. i always ask myself what makes one restaurant stand out over the others? Well, in my case, believe it or not, it's in the ice-tea! Yep. Newcastle like many other I've visited brews their own which keeps it refreshing and not bland or flavored. So many eateries use a powered mix. Go figure! So, they get good marks for that. Next I've eaten crab cakes pretty much everywhere I've been. The one I had at Newcastle was remarkable; not full of fillers but ingredients nicely balanced so you actually taste the crab and elevate it with the supporting cast. Nicely done and the remoulade sauce was a crowning achievement. I really wanted to lick the plate. We had an order of nachos and they, too, were nicely done, very differently than I've had before. The only thing I'd like to add to it would be some BBQ sauce to the pulled pork for some contrasting flavor. The textures were fine. There will be a number of restaurants you'll be able to choose in this area, all within walking distance. The Public House would be a good choice. The prices are a bit high but are inline with their competition. Portions are almost too generous and my wife and I shared both dishe we purchased. Our server and service were...
Read moreFood was ok, a bit pricey...that is of course, if they were not out of the menu item. We made reservations at 6pm on a Saturday. When we arrived we waited 5-10 minutes to be seated as the hostess worked on to go orders and was looking for change to give customers. When seated, we waved a fly or 2 away. It was a nicer day so the front doors were open. The waitress was pleasant, she greeted us, we ordered drinks and studied the menu. When we started to order, we were told the first item selected was no longer available, they had run out. We then received an "oh by the way", these 4 other items, (including one of the nightly specials), were out too. There were 4 of us & 3 had to relook at the menu for a second choice. We thought about leaving & made a quick call or 2 for another restaurant. Problem was - at now ~6:30pm on a Saturday with 4 people, there were no other options. My sister had fish & chips & enjoyed them. My son had a grilled chicken sandwich which was a little overdone and charred. He had wanted crab cakes for an appetizer, but they were out. He settled on a Bravas which was decent. My Mom, had a chicken & caesar salad. Think it was ok, but she never really complains about anything. Her heart had been set on a reuben sandwich. Since the seafood etouffee was sold out, I had the jerk burger, which did not have any jerk sauce on it. Was supposed to be medium well and it was more medium rare. When it came time for dessert - we opted to go out for ice cream. Don't think...
