Country Desserts Bake Shop on Lexington Street in Newton is a true hidden gem for anyone craving fresh, homemade-style baked goods. Two years ago, Igor Quintero, who had been working with Nancy, the prior owner, bought the bakery. He kept Nancy's wonderful offerings while adding many of his own. Walking through its doors, you're met with beautifully stocked cases brimming with an irresistible selection of treats, each one crafted with fresh, high-quality ingredients and free from preservatives--just like homemade desserts should be.
With so many delicious options, it's hard to know where to start. Their chocolate chip, oatmeal, and Italian wedding cookies, available in three flavors, are simply fantastic. The turnovers are exceptional, featuring perfectly flaky crusts filled with delectable fruit fillings, including adorable miniature raspberry versions. Their selection of pies is just as impressive, with highlights like their tangy key lime pie and irresistible lemon squares for citrus lovers.
Muffins here are moist and flavorful, but if you have a favorite variety, you'll want to call ahead or arrive early, as they tend to sell out fast. Each holiday brings special seasonal treats, and placing an order ensures you won't miss out. Today, I spotted Easter bread made the old-fashioned way, sparking nostalgia in my friend, who fondly recalled the way his mother used to bake it during his childhood.
Whether you're indulging in a personal treat or ordering a custom cake for a special occasion, Country Desserts Bake Shop's dedication to quality and deliciousness shines through. The only small downside is their limited hours--they're open until 2 PM during the week, 1 PM on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays. However, early birds can rejoice, as doors open at 6:30 AM.

Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy wife casually went there a while back, on a whim to get a snack and had a sub-par customer service experience there where she told me that the women behind the counter were a bit brash and rude. She brought back a couple of pastries which weren't all that great but I still decided to check it out... eventually.
That time came a few weeks ago where I was driving by the place and hungry. I parked in one of the two spots right in front and walked in.
Upon entering I found myself in a tiny store with a couple chairs and a table. In front of me was a pastry counter which was 1/3 full and only really featured a couple of brownies, some cookies and a few muffins. I almost wanted to walk out but figured that I'd just get a muffin, pay and walk out.
The woman never cracked a smile and barely mumbled an answer back at me after I asked how she was doing. I took my muffin, paid (cash only by the way) and drove the mile or so back home before digging in.
The muffin I had was flavorless and dry. Must like what my wife had brought back from her visits when she purchased those brownies. I'm not sure what they're trying to do there but if baking sub-par, dry and flavorless baked goods is their goal, then they're excelling!
All in all, Country Desserts is a conveniently located, mediocre bakery with terrible customer...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI really enjoy seeing this bakery set up at the Farmers Market each week. They are different in their baking as they do not add all that unnecessary salt and sugar. This makes the pastries more delectable, tasty, finger licking good, & guilt free! A few of our favorites are the Strawberry Rhubarb and Blueberry Peach pies. The flavor blends are done to perfection with tucked within a flaky, flavorful crust - NOT BURNT - an added plus. The cookies are definitely a must have every time I go because I can sneak a few of those for dessert anytime without that heavy feeling other cookies have. These cookies you can "see" are made with wholesome, real ingredients. Let's not get started with the muffins okay? Who doesn't love a good muffin for breakfast? Look no further...CDB's muffins are so tempting to have seven days a week, all year long! A different one every day it doesn't matter - they're all perfect for any time actually. Geez, I might have to run over to the store now...
