I stayed at the Delta by Marriott for two nights while visiting my fiancé’s family. What was meant to be a short, special trip quickly turned into a deeply uncomfortable experience all starting at the hotel’s Anchor Bar & Lounge on the evening of July 10th.
While waiting for my room to be decorated with and my driver to arrive, I decided to relax at the bar. From the beginning, I was treated with visible coldness and passive-aggressive energy by the bartender. As someone who’s worked in hospitality, I value great service and I was generous with my tip after the first order. Still, the bartender made her dissatisfaction obvious, as if trying to manipulate the environment so that others around would pity her or side with her. It was unprofessional, manipulative, and humiliating.
When I ordered a second round, she acted like she didn’t understand me likely because of my accent. I am a Latina woman, and I was alone. That seemed to be enough for her to treat me with clear disrespect. Even after trying to be kind again and showing gratitude, the coldness only continued. When it came time to pay, she falsely claimed my card didn’t go through. I immediately used the same card with Apple Pay and it worked perfectly. It felt like an intentional scene to publicly embarrass me.
As if that weren’t enough, staff from the kitchen started walking by and looking at me strangely clearly aware of what was going on. It was like an internal joke, and I felt surrounded by people acting in a coordinated effort to make me uncomfortable all while I was a paying guest.
The next day, I thought a different shift might bring better energy. However, I quickly noticed that the same kitchen staff from the night before had communicated with the new bartender. Her attitude shifted minutes after I arrived. And in a final act of passive retaliation, I was served an extremely salty apptizer of calamari of ca a clear message, not a mistake. Disrespect disguised as service.
As a frequent traveler, I’ve stayed at many hotels and rarely leave negative reviews. But what happened here was not just poor service it was a systemic, coordinated display of hostility, prejudice, and unethical behavior. At an airport hotel where diversity and international guests are expected, this kind of treatment is not just disappointing it’s dangerous for your...
Read moreCame in today and things were pretty quiet. The bartender didn’t acknowledge us until we came to the bar and then she said “menus”? And then said they’ll bring it to us after we had already been waiting.
There was one chef, a bartender, and one server. Calamari came out cold and was mostly deep fried banana peppers. I counted two pieces of actual calamari. There was a bug in my water. My friend ordered the jerk chicken pasta and watched someone else get theirs after we came in and she got hers super late. They ordered the same thing and got theirs first.
The server was very nice but other than that, the service...
Read moreAnchor Bar and Lounge, located in Delta by Marriott, is conveniently located across the street from The Marriott Residence Inn where we often stay when we come to Norfolk. What a wonderful, friendly restaurant/bar. Deborah, Quacy Anne, Tonya, Jose, Lloyd and Troy are all outstanding employees 👏 👌. I was happily surprised when Troy, an outstanding cook, prepared a delicious desert and he, Deborah and Quacy Anne sang a surprise happy B-Day song for my 70th. We definately will be back! Thanks so much for the excellent service and...
