Cafe Gourmet Bakery & Catering — Restaurant in North Canaan

Although this restaurant opened almost a year ago, we only found it in August 2025. Our loss. We have eaten there twice, once for breakfast and once for lunch, and our only regret is that we did not dine there sooner. The staff is friendly and efficient, the food is beautifully presented, well prepared, and so so good. Today we started with baked brie with fig jam and a cherry compote. We shared it and still had half to take home. Then we shared hand cut fries and a Steakhouse Burger with cracked pepper, Gruyere, carmelized onions, Bib lettuce, bacon, and chili thousand island dressing, all on a freshly baked bun made in house. Breads are made in house except for GF which they do offer. We loved everything. The restaurant is easy to find despite a sign which has not arrived yet. Traveling east on Route 44, Cafe Gournet is on the left before you get to the light at Route 7 South. It is across from the Stop n Shop mall. Try it....

An honest review:

• Service was attentive considering, warm, hospitable (As a new restaurant, I get the sense that they want to focus on quality as they gather their bearings + every service industry business these days is challenged with finding enough employees)

• The food was really good! I got a traditional two egg breakfast with potato hash & a side of fresh fruit. The potatoes were seasoned very well however a bit of a salt bomb for my palate.

• Though pricey for what some locals might be used to, you get what you pay for and everything was quality and cooked as desired

• Excited to try other things on their menu (The French Dip caught my eye)

It’s nice to see this space being used again. The owners live right in town. Wishing them luck...

Wow!!!! This place is INCREDIBLE! The food was absolutely delicious! We had the vegetarian omelette with goat cheese and a side of bacon and the croque madame ! It was all fabulous! The omelette came with the perfect portion of potato hash which was delicious too! Could have had another side of that! We finished off with the chocolate lavender cake with blueberry brown butter ice cream that was so good I don’t have the words to describe it!
