Burrito Shak — Restaurant in North Carolina

This was our first time having Burrito Shak after having left the area in 2021. The Hampstead location was always our go to spot. Came back for a summer vacay and this particular location was open and it is NOT it! First of all it was dead when we arrived, so I felt like there shouldn’t have been any excuse for all the issues we had.

As soon as we walked up, the food ordering area looked gross! It needed a good swapping out of food containers & major wipe down before the dinner rush. Beans in the pot looked dried, rice didn’t look fresh, veggies looking wilted, lots of grilled chicken just sitting on the back grill area and it didn’t appear as though a flame was on. I visited the ladies room and the area right outside the door was covered in old food on the floor, the bathroom baseboards were dirty, the place just seemed liked it needed a good deep cleaning! Oh and the huge tubs of chips sitting in bins behind the counter should be checked periodically because ours were all stale!! The queso was a gloopy mess in a 4oz cup, the taste was there just not great looking. The salsas were really good & thankfully my chocolate chip cooking was delish! Food was delicious and served quickly as usual! Although this is the first time I’ve felt like my order was a burden. All the staff were courteous and efficient, except the one male who was taking orders. While he was efficient, once I stated my order the look he gave me made me think he was going to make a joke. I asked what the look was for, expecting a smile or laugh with a joking remark, only to realize it was an annoyed look and apparently he didn’t like my order. He had to tell another employee to get the fries, told me they would be out when it’s done, and proceeded to take another order. My husband’s order, which he almost decided not to order because of the interaction I just had. It was surprisingly not very busy at that moment, and I don’t know what he had to do other than take the order, so it was surprising to get such a negative reaction. As someone who lives and works locally as well, I understand the craziness and stress this time of year, specially in this type of establishment, but it was obviously uncalled for and bothered me enough to write a review because of it. We have passed by this place a million times but never had the time to stop, sit down and enjoy a meal.

Well, that all changed tonight! We were pleasantly surprised! I told my better half that this will be a definite do-over! Love trying new, local places to dine. Don't live in Surf City but work in the area many days a week.

This is a MUST TRY if you've never been here. If I had to compare it to something, the closest would be Chipotle.... but I don't like Chipotle...lol.

We were undecided on what to get. A couple came in behind us and we told them to go in front of us because we were still trying to decide what to get. She recommended "The Lane". It comes in a bowl or burrito and you build it yourself. Was amazing! The have pintos and black beans (no refried beans...Texas girl all the way).

Hats off to the amazing staff that were working the line. All of them seemed very eager to help, smiling, happy and friendly.
