We came to El Rey for my birthday lunch because the original restaurant we planned to go to was closed. This was only the second time going, the first time when they first opened years ago. It was good then and it is exceptional now. The salsa served with the tortilla chips was just as I like it: thick and spicy, though you get a mild one too. But the Hacienda plate, full of plump shrimp, chicken and steak strips, and a homemade cheese sauce was simply mouth-watering! And it was a large portion for lunch. I took half home to enjoy later. The top shelf margarita was worth the extra $$ because it was a generous pour and an attractive presentation with fresh fruit slices. The wait staff was attentive and pleasant. When the waitress realized it was my birthday, she offered me a complimentary dessert. My only complaint, if you'd call it that, is indoors was extremely cold. We ate outside to be more comfortable. I'd highly recommend El Rey for fresh, well curated Mexican food.

My family has been coming here for years, have always loved this place. We came 7 days ago and it was as good as ever. Today, a new menu with higher prices…not that unusual I guess. Also new is an automatic 25% tip for 6 or more which is not only the highest I’ve ever seen, but 6 of us were finished eating by the time my wife’s food finally came, plus my daughter had to send hers back twice to have the ā€œdairy freeā€ tacos she ordered (at least she could keep my wife company while she ate)…far from 25% service, especially considering it was 18% 7 days ago by comparison. BUT, the clincher for me is we only got 2 tiny cups of salsa and 2 small baskets of chips for 8 people and were told it was $3 for each refill when we asked for more (see pic)…we had unlimited of both 7 days ago. Unacceptable. Sadly, they’re crossed off of our list for good.

The whole experience was AWESOME. Everything from the plate ware, the service, the seating, and the presentation was tops. Among my top 3 experiences at a Mexican restaurant. They even had an adorable robot that delivers your food to the table so the server can easily disperse hot plates to each person safely. My kids loved that! And the food was so well plated. You can tell the kitchen didn’t just slop it on the plates. Everything was carefully placed on the plates with intention. It looked wonderful. The portions were plentiful, not skimpy and everything was delicious. Lupe, the manager stopped by our table several times to check on us and made friends with our 2 year old. Our drinks stayed full, requests were met promptly and the music wasn’t too loud. Every staff member was ready to engage and was KIND. Our new fave Mexican spot!

Went for Taco Tuesday with my wife. I always like to have free salsa and chips when you sit down. They have four different salsas, mild tomato, spicy tomato, green tomatillo, and orange habanero. These last three are spicy, but not over the top (I like spicy; if you can’t handle too much ā€œspicynessā€ stick with the mild). The homemade guacamole with jalapeƱo was very good and not too spicy. I like mine with more onion and garlic. For Taco Tuesday, they offer 4 kinds of street tacos for $1.99 each; grilled steak, grilled chicken, shredded chicken and ā€œgroundā€ beef. The chicken is chicken breast. There is a choice of homemade corn tortillas or non homemade flour tortillas. Of these I liked the shredded chicken, which was more moist and had (a tiny amount) of green sweet pepper, and the ā€œgroundā€ beef ( I put quotes around ā€œgroundā€ because it’s not hamburger, it’s more like stewed beef which has then been minced) which was juicy and flavorful. I also note that unlike some restaurants that give you barely any meat in your taco, these were filled a reasonable amount. You can top the tacos with any two of onion, cilantro, lettuce or Mexican cheese. For dessert had the fried ice cream and the churros ( for the churros we tried both Oreo style and regular style with chocolate filling. The Oreo style didn’t do much for me and was chewy. I like a crisp churro. The plain with chocolate filling was less chewy, but next time I think I’ll try them unfilled). Our waitress was a sweet young girl, and all the staff were friendly. The dining room we were in was fairly basic. They also had margarita specials for $3 and $5 which...

Hacienda El SLOW

And where are the child labor laws!?

Ordered online here, prepaid.

Waited in a long line of cars with the other poor saps like me who didn’t know that this restaurant operates on a clock with no batteries in it. Had some kid (maybe 8 years old?) come out and ask me my name 4 times over the course of time that I waited. Never got my food.

Ordered food online at 5:30, email confirmation said food would be ready by 6:10. Silly me getting there a couple minutes early!!

Guess

How

Long

I

Waited

THREE HOURS!!! Just to get a refund, still never got my food even though some toddler employee would come out every 40 minutes or so and tell me they were working right on it. By hour 2 I knew it was never coming. Got out of my car and chatted with the guy behind me who had the exact same problem. After going inside, I figured out part of the issue. Didn’t see a single person over the age of 16 working there!!! Took another 20 minutes to get my refund before I could finally leave a place that makes the DMV seem fast.

Pass HARD on this one. Have eaten here before. Food ain’t that...

My boyfriend and I just moved to Waxhaw. We have tried several other establishments in town that were above and beyond. However, this restaurant was sub par. We ordered the steak and carnita fajitas for two and asked server to have mushrooms put on the side as I hate mushrooms. It took forever to get our food and then once it arrived the server was juggling too many plate's and dropped our guacamole / my bottom of plate was covered in the sides for the fajitas. Then the steak and carnitas had mushrooms cooked right in and not on the side. The server came back and was like sorry the cooks didn’t listen. Mistakes happen but I’m not eating the food. I hate mushrooms! They didn’t give a discount or try fixing it. We paid full price for something I didn’t eat. Very disappointed. There’s other Mexican restaurants in the area so I’ll frequent those but we will not be back to this establishment. What if someone had an allergy? Maybe in the future we will give another chance but as of now it’s a...
