I don’t even know where to start. First and foremost, I am so grateful that I found this place. In less than 12 hours I have already started telling family and friends about it. I ordered last night an hour before the kitchen closed. I called in and asked the employee to be patient with me as I just found this place online and I was viewing the menu as I attempted to order. She was so patient and kind. I ordered the sampler and the chicken meal with baked macaroni & cheese and baked beans as my sides. The food was FRESH. Did I mention I ordered an hour before the kitchen closed? And the food was fresh! My daughter ate most of the fries from me. They were fresh and tasty! These deep fried macaroni and cheese balls are now my new favorite snack! And the sauce that came with it!!!!!!! The sauce!!!!! The sauce!!!!! It was EVERYTHING! Okay, okay. The meats were all flavorful! The baked beans were so good! Like, some places over do it with the chopped seasoning in their baked beans. Not here!!!! It was a perfect balance of sweet & savory. I’m not sure what the sauce is called that I got for the chicken, but it’s not pictured because I dropped it. It’s white. And it’s goooooooood. The customer service was perfect. Everyone was kind and although they were pretty busy, everyone worked well under pressure. The moral of the story is: GO HERE!!!! The food is great. The service is even better! I found a new Barbeque spot. And I live on the same street. I can’t believe I’ve been living on Montague a whole year and just found this place.

On a recent visit to Charleston, my family stopped by for a late lunch at Southern Roots. I’m genuinely torn about how to rate this restaurant. I had the brisket sandwich, which didn’t have much flavor to it. The bun was soggy making it impossible to eat, almost as if the meat had been kept under heat lamps with water, designed to some how keep it hot and moist. I tried all of their bbq sauces and really wasn’t impressed with them. The vinegar was just that…vinegar with a little spice to it. Not like any other vinegar bbq sauce I’ve ever had or made. The spicy honey was okay but that’s what it was…honey and red pepper flakes. Their standard bbq sauce was decent and had a good thickness to it. Lots of great ideas on these, I just didn’t feel like most of them were executed very well. My daughter had the brisket quesadillas, which she said were great. We ordered a side of macaroni and cheese, which was just kinda okay. Having said all of that, our waitress was a delight. It was nice to be able to scan a QR code in order to pay when we were done. I hadn’t seen that before but it was a nice touch.

We placed an order online and it was supposed to be ready by 7pm. We ordered the brisket cheesesteak, jalapeño poppers, brisket chili, and pulled chicken/brisket sliders. The food was not even ready until 1 hour later. I watched several customers come in and sit down order their food, and left before I even got my food. The kitchen manager was too busy sitting at the bar instead of helping making sure everything was correct in the back. After waiting 1hr for my food they had the order wrong and left off part of my order. They didn't even have any brisket Chilli and couldn't give me my money back or substitute it out for anything else. The girl helping was nice but really didn't know and kept quoting me wait times . Oh and don't order the jalapeños poppers. The picture on the website is definitely not what you will get. See picture below. Definitely false advertisement for $12. The food was bland and fatty. We couldn't even eat it. Totally not worth it.

My wife and I went on a Saturday afternoon. I ordered the brisket, with a 1/4 rack ribs with coleslaw and mac and cheese for the side. My wife ordered the brisket philly with grits and hash. Service was quick and the time between ordering and receiving food was quick. 10 minutes or less. My portion seemed small, even for the advertised 8 oz brisket. The brisket was good. Nice smoke ring and well developed bark. It was just a bit bland. (That's a consistent theme throughout). The mac and cheese felt more like buttered noodles with melted cheese. It was okay. The coleslaw I didn't like but I recognize that as personal preference. It was very vinegar forward where I'm used to the mayonnaise heavy slaw. The ribs were small and cooked well, but boring. The best parts of both types of meat were the fatty pieces which were succulent and delicious, as fat tends to be. I recieved a bonus cut of cornbread that I don't remember seeing as part of the meal but it was my favorite part. It was a touch more savory than sweet (which I prefer) but balanced both worlds well. A bit of honey or butter and it leans towards the direction of your preference. My wife's brisket philly was good. The portion was a good size and the toppings were appropriately balanced with the brisket. The quest on top wasn't wet and brought it all together. Her grits and hash, after a bit of salt and Tabasco were very good.

Waitress was Ella. She was great. We loved her energy. We were warned of the football game on when we came in. It was boistrous, as it should be. It didn't bother us, but if you like to eat in a quieter environment, I'd avoid the establishment during a game.

I would come again and try something else. Overall, decent food and friendly staff but there is better BBQ...

We were not impressed! We stopped by on Sunday March 23rd with a party of six. The hostess seated up pretty promptly and the waitress came to take our orders. Several of the folks in our party ordered specialty drinks off of the menu. I ordered a bourbon and ginger ale with a lime slice. I stated lime slice at least three times. After about 15 minutes my drink arrived without a lime slice and the other drinks had not arrived. I went to the bar to get my own lime slice. Another 10 minutes went by before the other drinks arrived. Two of the drinks were made incorrectly. We decided to order appetizers, stuffed jalepenos and brisket nachos. After about 25 minutes the appetizers arrived. The nachos barely had any meat on them and we asked for serving plates to share the appetizers. After 10 minutes the waitress still hadn't brought our plates so we had to go to the bar to ask for them. We then ordered. Several of us got the brisket platter and brisket sandwiches with sides. The brisket was warm, not hot, and was quite fatty. The fries were burnt to a crisp. The coleslaw was warm. The succotash was cold. The Brisket Philly was almost unbearable to eat. The baked beans were cold and tasted like they had just been poured out of a can. The bun on my brisket sandwich was severely burnt and was smashed down by the cooked to paper thin. Throughout the entire time we were there, I waitress only showed up about four times. There were about a total of 12 people total in the restaurant and our waitress only had our table and a table of 2 people she was waiting on. We will not be back and recommend that others avoid the Southern...

My experience was filled with duplicitous behavior and thieving. Wednesday 11/28 around 7:45p I ate at this restaurant with my daughter our meal totaled $69.71 before tip after adding $5 tip $74.71. When I left this restaurant I had a pending charge of $69.71. The next morning my checking account balance had a pending charge showing from Southern Roots Smokehouse for $89.71 which is fraudulent. This is unacceptable and a violation of my personal property to add a 1 in front of the 5 and change a $5 tip to $15! I've called this restaurant everyday asking to speak with the manager or the owner to allow them the opportunity to rectify this blatant theft to no avail. I spoke to Jace and Ashley the latter hung up on me and would not answer the phone after, I called back several times even had my daughter call no answer. The thieving waitresses are probably screening phone numbers with a 720 area code. So to the owners and the manager, and the waitress that added $10 to my bill and changed the numbers on the receipt that I had already signed for the correct amount of $74.71 (by the way I have the original customer copy) to Ashley who asked me why I wanted to speak with the manager or the owner and when I tried to tell her she said she is not who I need to speak with and hung up on me. I notified my bank of the fraud I experienced at your establishment the charge is disputed. I've also notified the better business bureau about your thieving waitress. I will spread info on my experience until my money is returned to my bank account and I receive a new card (of course I had to cancel the old card that your thieving waitress misused) 7-10...
