I don't know what happened, but this is the first time we went back since they reopened. The prices increased a lot, not just by a dollar or two here and there, but the entire menu increased a very noticeable amount. We ordered all of our usual favorite dishes that we normally love that usually tastes excellent, but everything tasted different this time, EVERY SINGLE ITEM, even beverages, like it was a completely different restaurant. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't that good either. There was one new dish we tried that was extremely salty, so salty that none of us could eat it and it just didn't taste good at all, compared to everything else. When I explained to the lady about the dish, she brought out a take out container which lead me believe she barely understood enough English to comprehend what I was saying about the salty, inedible dish. This was not the regular lady who is usually there all the other times we have been. I asked if there were new owners or if there was a new cook and she claimed it is the same cook as always. I find that hard to believe as every regular item we normally ordered did not taste like it was from the same restaurant. No remedy was offered to correct the problem, even after I urged her to have the cook taste the dish himself. They did not offer to take it off our bill or cook a replacement dish, even after I asked if they could just cook another dish for me. She kept trying to get us to take home the leftover even though I repeatedly said that it was not good, that we don't like it, we won't eat it, and we don't want it. She claimed that the cook insisted that THAT IS how salty that dish is supposed to taste. As salty as some other restaurants can be, I understand some dishes are just not likely to please everyone's tastes, so I noted that I would never order it again. After getting tired of trying to communicate, I just gave up, paid the bill, and left. In all honesty, I don't think I'll be returning, as sad as that makes me feel, it just definitely...
Read moreWe really enjoy Phnom Penh; however treat our visits as special occasions for a few different reasons. I won't dive into the likes as I think most of those are a personal preference (dish selection, flavor, etc) and opinions will most likely shift depending on the individual. There are a few areas worth touching on.
Portion size: For us, this is not an issue as most restaurants tend to have very large portions. Though I can certainly understand that some people will have an issue with portion sizes being a bit on the smaller side. Again, I think they are appropriate, but if you are looking for a large meal and intend to leave stuffed, this probably isn't the place to go.
Price: In our family, this is one of the biggest limiting factors. We are a family of three and struggle to stay within an $80-$100 range for a meal at Phnom Penh. Our latest visit was about $60 which included two teas, a small soup bowl, a large soup bowl, one spring roll, and a noodle dish. Our daughter loves this place, so we use it as a special occasion or reward for her...when it is in the household budget.
Service: I have only seen one person running the register, taking orders, serving dishes, and bussing tables. She works hard. However at times this can lead to very slow meal times. Sometimes we get service and food to the table very quickly; other times it has taken over 45 minutes to get food to the table. So inline with the price, we plan sufficient time to eat knowing it could be awhile.
Bottom line, I recommend at least trying Phnom Pehn and making you own decision; just realize it won't be a cheap...
Read moreThis is in regards to my visit end of June 2022. I was so excited to come here and have been looking at the menu for months, since I'm not from Ohio. There aren't that many Cambodian restaurants in general. I've been to this restaurant in the Cleveland location before years ago and I absolutely loved it. This time around, I ordered about seven dishes. I liked that on the cover of the food menu, it says to let them know of any food allergies. I told the workers in both Khmer and English that my daughter is allergic to eggs and peanuts and we don't want that in any of our dishes. I even reminded them about the plear after they took the order, to not put peanuts. When we got our dish, the server apologies because the chef had peanuts and eggs in my dish. I made sure to not serve it to my daughter who's allergic to them. Next thing you know, my daughter had anaphylaxis. I had to leave the restaurant in a hurry, apply the EpiPen, and took her to the ER. I told the lady while checking out that there's cross contamination in the food. She kept denying everything. Yesterday, I took my daughter to get tested again to see if she's allergic to anything new in case that was the issue at the restaurant. The doctor confirmed that it's just eggs and peanuts. So I still think there's cross contamination in the food that we ate. Also all the food were just ok. They don't seem authentic as I remembered it to be years ago
If you have food allergies, do...
