This is the kind of hole in the wall local "institution" kept alive by nostalgia and a dearth of other late night options. Their simple menu offers a basic sampling of Mexican food with their hallmark dishes being sopes and crispy fried beef/picadillo tacos. I got some of both as well as a few soft pork tacos and chips with pico.
Most of I had was passable but kind of bland. I think they're relying more on the deep-frying and on customers probably having just come from the bar, and less on seasoning things up right. The chips were great, freshly fried and salted; the pico de gallo was also flavorful and fresh. The main items though just left me wanting for better. A friend of mine got the tamales and an order of fries, though we realized after getting home that they forgot the fries (so bag checking may be essential here). I tried some and thought they were decent, as did he.
All in all, I appreciate that this restaurant is here and has been for a long time, but I will probably be seeking out alternatives for my late night...
