It is good to finally have a good quality Indian restaurant chain open up in the Boston area as a good Dosa is hard to snare in these parts. Located in an easily accessible part of north borough - and I know there are some cynics out there who may not think Northborough itself is accessible (for them - this would be a reason to trudge up..if they like South Indian vegetarian food) - There is enough seating here and the staff are responsive and well trained. Although some of the tech did not work seamlessly and you cannot order through your phone or the tab they give you. We got in about 20 minutes after they opened in the morning on a weekend and found seating immediately. However, within the next 20 minutes, there was a significant queue of people waiting to be seated. I would be surprised if this continues in the long run, but this frenzy is attributable to the dearth of good Indian restaurants in this region.
We ordered a filter coffee, which was very good but expensive and then plantain Bhajji -which had no plantain and was definitely a bhajji. The chutneys were tasty enough. The Mysore masala dosa and plain masala Dosa were good quality but not exceptional. The pineapple Kesari was really good. In the end, it cost us about $45 per head and we were able to get out in about 40 minutes.
They have some packed savouries in the counter but did not see any fresh sweets - which would have been something to try for sure.
The cauliflower appetiser - mirapakaya cauliflower was amazing - worth going back just for this if you ask me…. As were the ghee idlies…just outstanding - you will not get anything better unless you go to new York or jersey. Then there is the little matter about the “South Indian thali” which is a “maybe” for me but it tastes authentic and is a good way for someone unfamiliar with the cuisine to draw some decent conclusions about what they like and what they don’t. It is expensive but 2 of us could not finish one portion. The mini tiffin however was very very good- although I would have loved to get some sweet portion with it The appam was ok - but better than anything I’ve had in Boston before- and the mushroom curry - paya- was pretty good too. Idiyappam was pretty good and the kurma was tasty and authentic - did miss a good potato stew to go with this though.
The royal falooda was large colourful and good! Too much jelly for me and too little rose syrup- but I’m nitpicking now… One odd thing is that if you are eating in but also want a take away - they will ask you to get up and go and order in the takeaway counter rather than just bring it to you on the table - which is inconvenient. Definitely been going back to explore other parts of the menu, which given what I sampled and by now it’s most of the menu, I feel will have the consistently good A2B taste standard.
They’ve added sweets now (mid 2025) and those are very good too- take a packet or a few as you leave - to...
Read moreA2B at northborough visit on the inaugural day (Dec 24, 2024) was indeed memorable, given that the long awaiting 'veg only' restaurant was long overdue in the New England (Greater Boston) area. Here is my first candid (detailed) review on our experience. Ambience and check-in: Checkin is smooth with their queue tracking app. Seamless integrated like any other A2B locations. Ambience is great with quite large dining space and the good waiting lobby seating area. Perfect restaurant seating well planned keeping in mind who are their customers. They have tables for a family of 4, or 6 are may be a big party group. I would rate 5/5 for the overall design and ergonomics included optimal space utilization. Quality of food & item nos. on menu: Like any other A2B , happy to see the consistent big spread of memu items primarily focusing on the south Indian delicacies/dishes. Large options across category to choose from. The following were the items ordered and my take A. Medu veda: Taste was good however the size is barely 2+". Really!! It's an art to make such small ones for the price. It was crispy but scooped out early which may have resulted in uncooked portions. B. Onion Rav dosa: This is one of their signature dosas type. I specifically go to enjoy the thin crisp rava dosa. It's was good and met the expectation. *Again the sides quantity may be bit liberal. Like chutneys C. South Indian thali: All time favorite and the key reason to visit a2b. Spread and varieties were decent. However the rice portion is bit less comparatively considering the three course that we generally have it with sambar, rasam and curd! Nevertheless, having food on a plantain leaf is a different experience altogether. Note: Pickle and Ghee doesn't come in the thali plate. Ask for it. D. Veg noodles: Asked for mild and was served hot, it was tasty E. Filter coffee: This is the signature hot beverage. Double filtered coffee, strong and good. Value for money: $$$ Yes it's expensive but you get the tasty 'authentic' food for which you derisred for, going to a2b! Service: is quick however there was some confusions to initiatallly which may be because of day 1 and everything is first time for the team.
Overall a great experience and thrilled to see an authentic 'south Indian vegetarian' (signature) restaurant in the new England area. Hoping to revisit and try out most of their dishes in the future. Thanks and wishing all the best A2B team. Hoping for the A2B standards to...
