UPDATE - July 13, 2024 From its origins in Transylvania, the stars of the show are now celebrated as the oldest pastry in Hungary and are often served as street food. The chimney cakes, or kürtskalács, are baked in small batches basted with butter and roasted on a spit until they are golden brown, filled with Nutella, and topped with cinnamon, raspberry, or Oreo. Today my partner and I had the pleasure of attending a Yelp Elite event, “Summer of Sweet,” at Kurly Kürtősh Café in Nutley. Upon entering, we were greeted by the owner, Nicole, and her staff, who welcomed us on our return. The clean interior remained lively, decorated with pretty props. We decided on the “IV” Strawberry Kone, featuring pink edible glitter with strawberry ice cream, a Berry Lindt chocolate truffle, and a Nutella drizzle. This delicious treat was created in collaboration with IV Jay, one of the hottest newest artists signed by Atlantic Records. While waiting, a sample-sized, tropical-flavored pineapple Sparkláde refreshed our palate. It’s crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and 100% tastefully delicious. These sweet chimney cakes can be enjoyed anywhere at any time. Nicole, you were right from our first visit; it won’t be our last, which we can continue to recommend. ———————— Who doesn’t love some sweet comfort foods, especially during this nice spring-like weather? What turned out to be a great start of the lunar year was visiting Kurly Kürtősh for an Elite event, thanks to Sara and the Yelp team. Located on East Passaic Avenue in Nutley, this establishment is an artisanal café specializing in chimney cakes, which landed a spot on the list of Yelp North Jersey's Top Places to Eat in 2023. Drawing inspiration from the Hungarian name, kürtőskalács was the star attraction—a sweet pastry with a crispy, flavored outside and a soft, fluffy inside, which I have known and experienced for a while. Upon arrival at a warm, bright, and clean shop, my partner and I were immediately welcomed with a smile and greeted by the owner, Nicole, and her staff, Stephanie. Being first-timers, she walked us through the whole experience. These can be eaten in so many different ways: with ice cream or other toppings, coated with oreo, walnut, or cinnamon, or with plain traditional cake right from the oven. We opted for 2 Kurly Kones with gourmet ice cream consisting of cinnamon kurl, Ceylon cinnamon sugar topping on the outside, and Madagascar vanilla bean ice cream inside, one with Lindor milk chocolate and another with Lindor dark chocolate topped with ice cream topping (Italian import Nutella drizzle). Our treat started out with a drink containing lemonade, sparkling water and syrup with a Yelp swizzle stick. The kones were so light, fluffy, and served warm that one could tell the ingredients were imported from Europe. The ice cream and toppings were top-notch. The prices were reasonable. On our way out, it was good to bump into my Yelp friend, Maria S. It’s worth a culinary trip to a slice of Hungary right in Nutley, and we can’t wait for a repeat performance, which we...

I first tried Kurly Kurtosh at the Ramsey Farmers' Market many months ago. I had recently returned from a trip to Budapest and was very happy to see chimney cakes here in Bergen County. I thought these were actually better than the ones I tasted in Hungary.

Fast forward to a global pandemic that shut the world down. I began to reminisce of my travels, wonderful life experiences, and...chimney cake. I wanted to have Kurly Kurtosh so badly, but knew I needed to wait until we started to reopen once more.

The first dessert I decided to spoil myself with during phase two of reopening? Kurly Kurtosh at their location in Hackensack. What a cute little place. The owner is a master at her craft, so meticulous in her preparations. You can see she puts her heart and soul into her cakes, ice cream, and business. She learned from the best of the best and shares her passion with every customer. This is 100% the kind of shop I want to support. No detail is overlooked. No small gesture is too small. Absolutely perfect experience from start to finish. If I didn't have to worry about the quarantine 15, I'd eat here every single day.

I love that there are so many options to choose from. One day you can enjoy some maple cream. Another day you might opt for an Oreo flavor. And on a hot summer day, maybe you'd like to have some Madagascar vanilla bean ice cream with a Nutella drizzle! There really isn't a wrong choice.

If you are in the area, please give Kurly Kurtosh a try! You will...

Absolutely amazing experience

Upon entering, we were immediately greeted warmly by Nicole, who is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and enthusiastic about the quality products and the international supply.

Nicole patiently explained the concept of Kürtöskalács, with the different flavors and shape of dough, the different dips and drizzle and the different ice cream availabilities. She then showed each of us the process, making everything fresh in front of us.

After helping us with our food, she explained all the drink options and we ordered our food. She served us, and we sat down to eat.

The Kürtöskalács was absolutely delicious. The dough was perfectly made, and the ingredients were fresh and really made it stand out. The vanilla ice cream has specs of vanilla beans, and was super smooth and delicious. The Apple Mint drink was really interesting. It was not overly sweet, and the mint flavor was real instead of extract so it was a nice note that really compliments the apple.

Nicole checked with us as we left, and spoke more about food and international cuisine. Kurlt Kürtösh is an instant favorite of ours, and we have zero complaints, and wouldn't change a thing. Seeing someone so passionate about their food is really refreshing and got us excited to try something new. We wholeheartedly recommend this location for others looking to try something new and delicious.

10/10...
