Chicken In A Barrel BBQ Wahiawa — Restaurant in Oʻahu

Decided to visit this place that just opened to support local small business. Upon entering it was empty and there was no one at the counter to greet or acknowledge you. We looked over the menu and decided to get the sampler, chicken plate, fries, cornbread and drinks. My husband and I were super excited and couldn't wait to eat after not eating all day. The food looked and smelt delicious. The first thing we noticed was that the fries were very salty and had a strange texture. We unwrapped the cornbread which was just wrapped in some cling wrap. The top and the bottom of the cornbread was a little doughy, if that makes sense. Almost raw, but yet is was cooked inside. Definitely not good at all. Then we opened our plates and decided to dig in. One of the worst things that can happen when you get a plate lunch...the rice is hard. Grrrrrr....I hate getting a plate lunch and the rice is not cooked well. It was hard and dry. It was not cooked with enough water. After spending all this money I decided to call and voice my disappointment. The young lady that answered the phone said that when she ate at 3 she noticed that the rice was hard and told her manager and they made a new pot. She said that they "scolded" the person that made the rice already this morning. I was expecting a "let me see what we can do", maybe a discount of some sort, "let me try and make this right" or anything like that, but nope. Even after I expressed to the young lady that the food was kinda expensive. She just said sorry and that's it. Will not visit this place again. I’ve been wanting to try this place for awhile now but too much has been going on that it was delayed till yesterday. Decided to try here for lunch and was not disappointed. Got takeout so as soon as i opened the bag and took out the contents a Bible Scripture was stamped on each box. It was a very pleasant surprise - John 3:16 is a scripture i know by heart and before we indulge in anything, we bow our heads to take a moment to give thanks to the Blessings we have in life. Mahalo for the wonderful reminder ! The Rib plate was delicious. Smokey and meaty. Very generous amounts of sauce were provided in containers for you to add to your preference. The sauce was a thinner consistency and I believe i tasted hints of molasses flavoring. The plate came with a scoop of rice and a cup of their chili which was good. The honey grilled cornbread was absolutely delicious !! A MUST try. And the half order of sweet potato fries were very good as well. I highly recommend trying here and look forward to trying other things on the menu in the future. As Always, support your local businesses!

02/14/2024 Ordered Family Barrel Meal- whole smoked chicken cut up, comes with sides of rice, coleslaw and macaroni salad. Also ordered Beef plate (slightly tangy taste, apple cider vinegar perhaps 🤔?) and chili cheese fries (sorry forgot to take pic of it 😓) and a piece of cornbread. My wife and I stopped by one evening on our way back from the north shore. At first I was not sure what we were getting into. The place was empty, just us and employees Brandon & Charles. We gave it a shot anyway and I must say that this may have been the best food during our stay on Oahu. We got the sampler platter to share with mac and cornbread. All of the meats were were excellent and tons of flavor, the mac was very good, now for the highlight of the meal, their honey butter cornbread. This was recommended by one of the employees (Brandon I think). This alone was worth stopping by. We talked about the meal many times and the cornbread was alway at the top of our conversation. If I remember right the meal was $21.xx plus drink & tax. Think about that. Where else are you going to feed 2 people for $22 on Oahu and make it so good that you feel you must write a review? There was enough to even bring some back to the resort for a late night snack. A great tasting meal at an affordable price is always enjoyable but when you add in the great customer service from Brandon & Charles, this place should be on everyone's list that visits the island.
