My first and never again visit to this bakery was one of the worst experiences. I happened upon this business while on my way to another store down the street. When I saw the bakery and the line of customers I thought it would be a great place to eat. When I reached the order counter I inquired if they sold gluten free foods and was told yes. I picked out 4 items paid for them and left. Once in the car I felt to break open one of the items I purchased to eat it. Usually I would just bite into whatever I was going to eat. As I was about to stuff my mouth my son said what’s that? I looked and said what. My son said that looks like hair and mainly dog’s hair. We turned the car around and I went back to the bakery where there was no line now. I went back to the counter to the same young lady who serviced me to ask if a dog was kept in the cooking/food preparation area and I was told no. I asked if the bakers wore hair nets and again told no. I said well I just left here making the purchase and the young lady said I remember you because I wanted gluten free items. I said to her there’s a hair in my food and proceeded to open my bag to show her but she said I didn’t need to do that and what would I like to replace it. I said just refund me and I returned all items. I thanked her and left. Oak Park doesn’t have many gluten free food places to eat at and when I find such a place I’m excited to be a loyal customer. I’d just like for this bakery to monitor their food preparation process and practices much more carefully. There needs to be a way for the Health Department to monitor food places such as this for the safety of customers gluten free or other but especially for seniors as myself,72 yrs. Of age so we don’t incur any significant health risks. I’m going to try to upload the pictures I took with the hair in my...
Read moreOMG WOW! Amazing bakery! I go to tons of bakeries & I think this is the best one in Oak Park & one of the best in Chicagoland! I LOVED everything I tried from the cookies, to muffins to scones. Super high quality & extremely fresh products. Some of the pastries were still warm from the oven as I got there right at 8 am when they open. Even then, there was a little line out the door. Many people got coffee drinks but I didn’t this time. They also have $2 wonky cookies (just weirdly shaped cookies) that are a great deal. I tried: chocolate chip cookie, banana bread, vegan chocolate muffin (extra delish), goat cheese chili scone (excellent) & the wonky birthday cookie (amazing & buttery - melts in your mouth). Can’t wait to go back & try other things! Please note the place is tiny with only a few tables & chairs & there’s metered street parking so I took my order to go.
10.25.24 update: the kale salad done is truly amazing! The toasted coconut cake was sooo good and the chiffon cake was delightful. The savory corn biscuit was good but I preferred the scone, which is totally worth...
Read moreBroken Tart is hands down the best bakery in Oak Park. The Kale Salad scone is the best scone I've ever had in my life. The chocolate chip ricotta cake is to die for. The sweet scones (when they have them) have always been amazing. The biscuits are tasty as well - seasoned to perfection. Love the smoothies and espresso drinks too. The staff is friendly and welcoming, despite often having a line out the door! I would skip the rosemary scone if you go and definitely get the kale and/or sweet. I've gotten a couple mini cakes as well, one of which was unfortunately pretty dry (this one was a carrot cake - maybe just a one off miss, since BT has usually been so good), but the other was amazing (some kind of hazelnut chocolate I believe). The regular bakery items have never disappointed! Cakes are also aesthetically beautiful, which is...
