Disappointed After My Most Recent Visit
I've been to Crepas Culichi in Oak Park about three times now, and while I've always found the food to be very average, my most recent visit on July 19th for my niece's Quinceañera was especially disappointing.
Let's start with the positives: the aesthetic appeal of this place is what truly draws people in. Cute drinks, heart-shaped dishes, and Instagram worthy decor. The staff is consistently very friendly, and the crepes are probably the best thing they offer. But that's where the praise stops.
The food overall lacks flavor, and the portions aren't filling for the average adult. The restaurant was noticeably warm inside, which was uncomfortable and unexpected for a place of this caliber.
The biggest issue: the pricing and unnecessary charges. We ordered a birthday crepe for $28, which is essentially the same as their regular crepe ($16-$18) with an added $3 fee for pistachios. I never saw, tasted, or felt a single pistachio inside of my crepe and no pistachios were sprinkled on top. The rest of the cost? Apparently for a reusable candle and singing "Happy Birthday." That's outrageous!
We ordered a $6 Blue Moon but didn't like how it tasted and let the waitress know right away. While I understand it's not the restaurant's fault someone didn't like their drink, a gesture of goodwill, especially for a party spending nearly $700, would have gone a long way.
We were charged $5 for a person who didn't show up--we made a reservation for 13, but only 12 attended. Why charge extra 1 individual person not attending? The restaurant was nearly empty at that time, so it was no inconvenience to anyone if it was 12 instead of the original 13. This wasn't charged on our tab it was charged AFTER I guess separately? When we called to ask why we had a random $5 fee they said they would check and call back. No one called us back so we had to follow up with them AGAIN. They said THEY REVIEWED THE CAMERAS AND CONFIRMED 1 GUEST DIDN'T ATTEND SO THEY HAD TO CHARGE US THE $5... lol WHAT A JOKE.
It honestly feels like they try to capitalize on their TikTok fame by overcharging at every opportunity. I've eaten at many restaurants in downtown Chicago with much better food, no extra fees, and a more satisfying customer experience.
Unfortunately, unless they make major changes to the quality of their food and pricing practices, I won't be returning. A cute aesthetic can only carry you so far. It's sad, I used to praise this restaurant so highly for how cute and creative they were with their decor and food presentation, and I truly admired that its women owned by 2 Latina sisters. I really hope they take these kinds of reviews into consideration and use them to enhance their restaurant...
Read moreI have been coming here for years, since before they moved from the south side. There menu was smaller back then and so were the prices. I usually take my daughter here on breakfast dates. Yesterday, I took my 5 year old and 10 year old for their valentine's date. We were sat in a timely manner because we had reservations. Here is what we got. Ordered: Crab Cake with the pablano mashed potatoes. It was delicious! Favorite thing on the menu. Sirloin steak medium rare, it was cooked to perfection with the rosemary fries, the portion of fries was interestingly small but the sauce it came with was not bad tasted like it was made with red wine. Carne Asada it was made well done, it was cooked perfectly. But honestly, y'all can go get tacos for less and it would taste the same. It was fancy Mexican dinner. Tortillas were made fresh. Lady and the Tramp - spaghetti and meatballs. It was great. Churro milk share, had more of a vanilla than churro flavor because it is made with vanilla ice cream but they could have incorporated the flavor in the milkshake better. The churro on top was yummy. Red velvet crepe was ok... I got some of the red velvet flavor and the cream was very tasty. Drinks - pink lemonades came in pretty cups, it had a lot of ice so it watered down the flavor the drink. Pistachio coffee was ok, the flavor of the pistachio does come through but the expresso by it's self is actually better.
I LOVE THIS PLACE. Only reason why I am giving a 3 star review was because of the service and some of the food quality like the deserts and the drinks. Our table was reserved for 1 hour and 30 minutes, we still had 20 minutes left at our table before we were asked to leave because the people had arrived for their table reservation. Which I did not realize till we were being rushed to pay. Our waiter was nice but I did have to repeat myself a few times and could mostly understand him. In the rush of trying to pay so we could leave the waiter created a guest list of 4 and there was only 3 of us, this was shady; which I also noticed after all the rushing because I was forced to pay a 19% tip fee instead of the 15 -18% tip. (The 19% tip fee is for guest of 4 or more). When I asked he was hovering over my shoulder and pressed the skip pin and asked me to sign. It was very frazzling. I also had two little kids with me one who was trying to get her CHEMO bag on and so I didn't have a moment to think. So this is just so you know pay attention to the time and to your tip options. The desserts are really for the frazzle and dazzle...
Read moreI, absolutely, would not return. If you have ANY dietary restrictions or food allergies, be very cautious! I’ve been plant-based, eating a vegan diet, for 9 years, and they brought me a crepe with chicken! I took a bite and knew it was chicken. I checked the menu ingredients of the “veggie crepe” to make sure that this couldn’t possibly be a plant-based chicken; it’s to have veggies only.
I ordered the “Veggie Crepe” and my companion ordered the “Poblana Crepe”; both of these crepes are listed as vegan on their “vegan/gluten free” menu. When the food was brought out, the runner said “veggie crepe” and sat the plate in front of me and then said “poblana” and sat the plate in front of my companion. Mine turned out to be the chicken crepe and my companion’s turned out to be the veggie.
I waved down, who I assumed to be the host/greeter, because he was nearest when I figured I had bitten into chicken. I told him what was going on and it didn’t seem like he got the gravity of the situation. It seemed like a minor thing to him.
The waitress was nice and apologized; she said she had put in the correct order. I don’t understand how such a thing could happen. When we were paying the bill; they acted as if they were doing a great service by removing the charge for the chicken crepe from the bill! We weren’t paying for that in the first place! Neither of us eat meat or ordered it!
Something else I noticed; the menu is very misleading. On the regular menu, the “Veggie Crepe” has dairy, but the same named “Veggie Crepe” is on the vegan menu with vegan cheese. So you could order the veggie and get dairy or vegan cheese without knowing, if you don’t look at the regular menu. Also, they have the gluten-free and vegan items grouped in a separate menu together, which can be confusing, it almost suggests that the items are both gluten free and vegan. These should be two separate sections. I asked for the manager, who was the same person that greeted us, Jesus. I told him everything about the menu as mentioned above.
The restaurant was absolutely negligent and didn’t seem to sincerely care that the messed...
