Brotzeit Lokal — Restaurant in Oakland

To the Management and Staff at Brotzeit:

We had a regrettable experience at your “Lokal” this Sunday afternoon due to the appalling behavior of one of your staff. The person this complaint concerns is the person who seated us.

We chose to sit outside. It was 94°F and the sun was scorching where we sat, so my husband adjusted the umbrella by our table. The person who seated us came outside to straighten the umbrella and reprimand our table with an antagonistic tone. If the customer should not adjust the umbrella - or whatever the case is that warrants attention or being informed of, or rules to adhere to, etc. - then simply saying so would suffice.

Since the four of us were there to enjoy cold beers after a long and hot day, we did not fuss, talk or complain despite this person’s off-putting behavior clearly making us all uneasy. We tried to ignore the person and their toxic behavior and energy.

Unfortunately, the awkwardness and unpleasant situation was made worse when we asked said person, after looking through the menus we were given, whether there is also a beer menu. Our question was met with a tone of disdain in the person's response that “The QR code has everything,” and “You’re also welcome to walk inside. There’s a chalkboard.”

The condescension and hostility that this person exhibited towards us paying customers is egregious and unacceptable.

Thankfully, the person who served us was not the same person. Also, thankfully, the person who served was friendly, polite, and professional, a huge relief after what we were just put through.

We let our server know what happened and that we appreciated their treating us paying customers with respect.

I am left with distaste from this experience at Brotzeit Lokal and find it regrettable that this is what I have to share about your restaurant and Biergarten, which my husband and I often pass by and definitely won’t be a customer of again much less make the mistake of taking others with us.

I also bring this to your attention as a paying customer in and of the community that Brotzeit Lokal is a part of and also relies on for your business, and also especially since there is a discrepancy with actuality and statements relating to your business and staff as explicitly stated on your website that “Our staff are the backbone of our business and we expect a lot of responsibility, creativity and energy...

DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS BUSINESS! The first time I went there was on April 1, 2022. I ordered the veggie sausage. It was tasting good until I pulled a long black hair, that was not mine out of my mouth while gagging. We reported the hair and that meal was removed from our check. Then I decided to give it another try because it is right on the water and it was a beautiful day. I brought my daughter there for lunch on this past Saturday April 9th. We received the worst service and my daughter who is bi-racial was made to fill very uncomfortable. Our server got annoyed when my daughter started asking questions about the drink menu. He proceeded to roll his eyes instead of being helpful and said he would come back. He came back and we ordered food and drinks. When our food came it was brought by another server, I asked her for some mayo for our buns. She never came back. I saw our server and told him we had asked for mayo and no one ever came back, he proceeded to look at me and say "if someone said they are bringing it they will bring it" another 5 minutes passes and still no mayo. I went in and asked for the mayo. He comes out, and literally slides the mayo across the table and walk away. He was so incredibly rude my daughter wanted to leave. We had asked for straws for our drinks, those were so old that when we picked them up they cracked down the middle. Our server asked every other table around us if they needed anything else, more food, more drinks, etc. He never came back to check on us, or ask if we needed anything else. I requested to speak to the manager. She comes over, with her hands in her pockets and says "what's up" Is that anyway to greet an upset customer? I told her what we had experienced up to that point, that my daughter felt so uncomfortable that she wanted to leave, and how rude her server was and her response was "he must be having an off day" and proceeded to offer us a %15 discount. Totally unacceptable! No apology, nothing. I truly believe that the all white staff at this establishment are racists. There was no reason we should have been treated that way. I will never patronize this business again. If you are a black or brown or any other race other that white, I would not suggest going to this establishment. It was very disappointing to...
