Got the call on day before for Cam Anh soft opening. Today me and colleague look at each other. What do you think? It's raining and wet not ideal driving conditions. Look how about you drive and I shotgun? Are you sure? Yes. I'm sure. Let's roll then. Cam Anh didn't seem to change anything that of former Cam Huong only splash of paint and privacy string curtain shield prying eyes away. Seating arrangement and equipment is unchanged. Food containers on steam table held about a quarter of food each being careful not to waste. There are fourteen banh mi to choose from all 4.50 each no matter meat or vegetarian. The baguette use is what kept me happy. Light airy and crusty taste just like the former CH version only narrow and longer. So, for the moment of truth, the taste test. Oh wow! JOY OY! It's decent.. Can it beat that TL shop in SF? Not close, but we're talking oakland here after all. First, the fixings can use a little more and few slices cold cut will do wonder. Do you agree? Yes. But you're the expert Linda. You're full Vietnamese right Linda? Okay. I think more pate spread and mayo would moistened it up making it more desirable to eat. I love this job, it pay exceptionally well, good food/drink all the time, perks, paid vacations, benefits. I hardly pay for anything these days when eating out. Go to client places all the time. Shut up and just eat? Okie dokie! Btw, who's driving back later...(short pause). Okay. I guess it's me...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis was a great place in it's previous incarnation as Cam Huong. But a new person took it over, changed the name, kept the same menu, and raised the prices significantly.
Since the name change we have tried it occasionally. Nothing is as good as before, and the prices are too high, but I kept hoping they would work out the kinks, because they are convenient. This is the most expensive banh mi around, the most expensive spring rolls, and the quality has gone downhill. We gave it one last try this weekend. The banh mi was ok, but nothing compared to Cam Huong on international, which is the same as the original. Egg rolls were recommended. They were cold, and might have been good hot, but the texture was off. Spring rolls were oddly fishy, and over priced. Fried rice was clumped and hard, and tasted like it had turned. I spit it out.
I'm disappointed, because this location is convenient, but we will...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIts funny how all the high reviews are from white people who didnt grew up eating at this place. I havent been to this spot in over a decade and a lot has changed. The fried rice, eggroll, and banh mis were just so so bad smfh. Compared to 15 years ago this place is a shell of itself. Rice texture and taste felt like a couple of days old rice. The banh mi bread was definitely stale. The egg rolls were also old from what i can tell as it was super dry. Theres no way it came out of a fryer that morning. This place sucks which is why theres no more big lines for it anymore. Ive heard the rumors of the new owners destroying it but didnt realize it was this bad! Prices are also outrageous for bad food. White people love to inflate these reviews and trick peopleššš Edit: At least its cleaner now for the...
