Been here a few times, first experience was nice and the barista was friendly. Second time however was off putting. I walk in to an empty cafe and say 'how's it going' to the barista, she just walks up and stares at me. I order a coffee and without waiting or asking if there's anything else, turns the screen to me and walks away to start my drink. I ask for the drink 'for here' a few seconds after she started (she didn't give me the choice when taking my order) and proceeded to, without a word, stomp to the glasses and aggressively pour the espresso into it, spilling some of it. Proceeds to loudly bang spoons and such around aggressively as she finishes up. I say "sorry my bad" and once again silence. She puts my drink on the counter, the sides of the cup dripping, and walks away. I was stunned. I don't know what she's going through and I have been there myself working in food/customer service for nearly 10 years, but maybe take a day off if you're going to treat customers like a burden for a simple request. I'd understand if it was busy or if I had some complicated request, and even then, like no offense girl but it's your job? Life is hard and once again idk what this girl is going through. I went out to cheer myself up but ended up crying for quite a while after this interaction. I will be hesitant to give this place...
Read moreRoom 389 has been welcoming all hours of the day. I am here nearly everyday. The decor has rich dark woods, a long bar, stools and tables (and a larger "lounge" space), and is balanced with artisanal lighting and a wall displaying forgotten pages from hundreds of books. Living in the neighborhood, it has quickly become more than a bar/cafe, but a "community gathering destination". People stop by here from the neighborhood, from walking around nearby #LakeMerritt, or between #GrandLake & #Lakeshore and the #Oakland #Uptown neighborhoods.
The bar has some of the best staples of #beer on tap, and always with creative rotation. The bartenders are friendly and funny, the house drinks are creative and well-prepared, and the crowd cheers the local teams among the 3 monitors. The liquor selection is deep and varied to cater to your specific taste. With DJ's spinning on different nights, live Gypsy Jazz on Monday's, trivia on Wednesday's, there is truly something for everyone here.
By morning, it is a GREAT coffee shop serving boutique Oakland coffee roaster by individual pour, #BicycleCoffee, and pastries from local bakeries. The music and baristas are always inviting, and with free wifi, the cafe has the perfect balance of buzz, solace and caffeine to create a healthy relaxing or work...
Read moreRoom 389 in downtown Oakland had potential — cool location, decent crowd, music was alright. But all of that went out the window thanks to one incredibly rude bartender.
I was out celebrating my birthday and asked, politely, if they offered any kind of birthday discount for a drink. Not only was I met with a flat-out “no,” but the way it was said was condescending and dismissive, like I was out of line just for asking. No smile, no courtesy — just straight attitude.
The energy shifted immediately. It made me — and the people I was with — feel unwelcome, like we were bothering them by being there.
It’s one thing to not offer a discount, but it’s another to treat a customer with zero respect. Especially when they’re out trying to enjoy their birthday. That bartender’s attitude single-handedly ruined the vibe of the night.
Won’t be coming back
Wouldn’t recommend to celebrate birthdays here. 60 bucks just on...
