IMHO, Pgh Taco Boys offers some of the best Mexican food in the country. When I'm in town for a week, I try to get it two-to-three times and would go more if they were open on Sunday and Monday nights.
My favorites are the portobello quesadilla, the breakfast "boyrito," and the hibiscus agua fresca, but EVERYTHING is excellent, including the chips and salsa.
Ask for a container of salsa verde if you get the breakfast "boyrito" with bacon and eggs. The combination of those three is sublime.
I give it a "4" for atmosphere because (1) it's just a walk-up counter and a few stools against the other wall, and (2) and I know this is unfair, but you have to drive through Oakmont to get there. (Whoever designed the streets and traffic patterns in Oakmont should be exhumed and hung. That being said, I'm glad they're in Oakmont, because there's not much else worth eating among the other twenty-or-so "restaurants.") Once you're there, the food and the friendly staff more than compensate for any inconvenience.
There's a lot of bad restaurants in the 'burgh that are surprisingly busy and a lot of bad Mexican restaurants everywhere. The Boys' food is so good that there should be a line outside of it whenever they're open.
Here's a photo of their Friday fish fry special--fried cod tacos with jalapeño hush puppies--with a bowl of Southwestern clam chowder and the fresca. (If I remember tomorrow morning, I'll add a photo of the breakfast boyrito with salsa verde...
Read moreI love Pittsburgh Taco Boys. From our first meal there when they opened their Oakmont location they became our favorite lunch spot. You can literally order anything or everything on their menu (and I have) and not be disappointed, and they are consistently delicious over time.
The tacos are very meat/mushroom forward, and the focus is on that primary ingredient and there's a reason why: it's amazing. The vegetarian option is the best that I've had anywhere in ages. The flavors are spot on and easily compete with anything I've had in California.
My 4 year old loves their cheese quesadillas and empanadas, and she fell in love with the Ripley's Believe It or Not Pinball Machine, so now we always have to remember quarters when we bring her. The staff are personable and always recognize us. They are quick with a Taco and even quicker with a smile. I know some local businesses that ordered lunch for everyone from there and then raved about it.
They've added to the menu over time and changed things out here and there but everything I've had has been great; tacos, street corn, boyritos, quesadillas and even the breakfast burrito which is, as far as I'm aware, only available on Sundays for brunch (so make a point to go there and get one). This is my favorite spot in Oakmont and I just hope that my I don't wear them out too fast, because my family and I keep...
