I must preface this post by disclosing that I grew up on Jo-Jo's pizza - the one that used to be located at Sylvania Tam-O-Shanter in The Loft, the bar overlooking Rink 1.
I will admit, I hadn't given much thought to Jo-Jo's over the past few years. The one on Monroe St. used to be a staple of the after work restaurant crowd, before Pat left and later passed away - the restaurant crowd now goes to a different area bar that I shall not promote here. From knowing current employees at Jo-Jo's, however, I've come to try their food again, many times, and it's just as good as my distorted, nostalgic view of my childhood remembers.
While my pre-pubescent memory fills my head with lies like "the Snake Man jump in Mega Man 3 wasn't THAT hard" and "the Dallas Cowboys used to be a good football team", Jo-Jo's pizza speaks nothing but truth. One bite of that deliciously crispy pepperoni and banana pepper pie and I'm immediately transported back to the 1998—99 District Championships, watching Matt Mills score on a breakaway with 22 seconds left to tie it up against Bowling Green. BGHS would go on to win the Districts and then also the State Championship, because that's just what the Bobcats did in the 90s: they won hockey games.
But why am I talking about other Jo-Jo's locations in other Jo-Jo's times, you ask? Well it's because even though the franchises may change cooks or managers or owners, this particular Jo-Jo's still has that exact same delicious food and wonderful atmosphere that they all once had, way back when, in better times. Frequently named either champion or runner-up in the City Paper's "Best of" Edition for "Sylvania bar" and most recently named "the closest thing to real Italian pizza" by famed stoned food enthusiast Michael Walker, they have everything you will ever need from a pizza place that serves liquor, and almost everything you want from a bar that...
Read moreUsed to be a very happening place! I’ve been to this place atleast 10 times! But for some reason the last couple of times I went there were only 4 tables on a Friday night, and it took us 45 minutes to get our food! Finally when the food was brought out, they only brought out my deep fried mushrooms and nobody else’s food everybody either watched me eat or ate my mushrooms! Then each person’s food would come out in 2 minutes apart! Whatever happened to bringing out the food all at once? Every time we go there, we are always killing either gnats or flies. I’ve seen other reviews where other customers experience the flies as well! Paint is chipping off the wall above the counter, how the Health Department allows this, is beyond me! The owner really only cares more about the bar, than he does the restaurant! I really think they are trying to focus on take out more so than eat in! I once ordered a draft beer there and it was flat. When I see a restaurant that has gnats and flies and chipped paint, it makes me wonder if the owner even cares! It also makes me wonder how clean are the fountain drink machines and the coolers! I really don’t get it! What was once a thriving restaurant is now DEAD, and I can assure you it will only get worse! The owner has simply given...
Read moreI have eaten at JoJos for decades. I love them. I am now gluten free so I ordered a Gluten free pizza and let me say, it tasted worse then any frozen pizza I'veever eaten. The crust was aweful. Tasteless cardboard. A new gluten free crusts needs to be considered.
I tried it because it was 1/2 Monday so I thought why not. The young waitress serving our water told us the gluten free was also 1/2 off, I asked her twice and then I was charged full price and our waitress was very nasty about it saying she didn't tell me that.
I paid it of course. I wasn't going to argue, but note... she recieved no tip for her attitude. Tips are based on service. I do have to say, all the way up to the checks, she was efficient and kind to our entire party of 10 but... I felt over charged and took it out of her tip.
I'm not saying I'll never go to JoJos again but I will NEVER order their gluten free...
