Kahootz Draft House — Restaurant in Okeechobee

I'll straight up tell you that this is not the place for everyone, but it was the place for my daughter and me on a trip from Clearwater to Palm Beach. First of all, just saying you were in Kahootz in Okeechobee is worth the stop. I wish they sold t-shirts!

We checked Google Maps for a restaurant closest to us and Kahootz popped up. We made a quick u-turn and approached the building which, in all honesty, is unimposing. We found the door (it isn't obvious) and walking in saw a couple of older gentleman shooting pool at the two pool tables and a bar in the back. We headed to the bar.

Lisa greeted us and explained that everything on the menu was made to order. Nothing frozen. Nothing microwaved. That let us know that we should relax and not expect food to come out immediately. We got a couple of drafts and ordered.

I'm not sure what was best about this place: Lisa and the owner Tommy who kept us company and told stories, or the food which was excellent. My daughter ordered the Ruben with coleslaw instead of sauerkraut (try it), I had a fried chicken sandwich and we shared fries. The steady stream of customers picking up to-go orders testifies to the quality of the food.

Kahootz is unpretentious with a no-nonsense hands-on owner. If you are in a hurry, fussy, or "privileged," stay away: this isn't the place for you.

I wish I could have tried their food, the reviews online sounded great. I sat down with my husband, we received the menus, ordered drinks… and that’s were it ended. Waitress came back without the drinks to say anything we order will take 45-50 minutes to make because the kitchen is backed up. We asked about getting appetizers and if those would come out sooner, but it was the same response. The place was nearly empty, only a few booths with people, that’s when we realized what was happening, they wanted US to leave for some reason. I was so embarrassed because I didn’t see a reason why they would do that. I have never experienced something like that. We left quietly. And of course, will never be returning, not that they would want us...

Our food was served helter skelter, so some of were done before others were served. The waitress became rude and wouldn't even bring our bills to our table when we complained and completely stopped service for those of us who weren't yet done. The manager was offensive and only complained that he had one cook, yet we had made reservations and they kept filling carry out orders before serving our party. One of us never even received their food order! It was ridiculous! I'll never go back and we used to frequent that restaurant. Behavior by both employees was unacceptable in response to customer complaints. They should be be able to handle complaints in the service industry, especially if they are going to provide such...
