Consistency and Hospitality That Never Miss
In a city thatâs as fleeting as the latest Instagram trend, thereâs something truly rareâand refreshingâabout consistency. Pizzeria Gusto has not only mastered this elusive art, but theyâve done so with a warmth and hospitality that feels like a long-lost friend offering you a seat at their table. Since its opening, this gem has become a staple of my dining routine, like the dependable film you always return to, no matter how many new blockbusters come out.
Letâs talk apps. The Gusto hot wings are hands down the best in the cityâcrispy, tender, and coated in a sauce so addictive it should have a buyer-beware sign. The roasted carrots and fennel are like the plot twist in The Sixth Senseâunexpected, refreshing, and just a little bit mind-blowing. Meanwhile, the arancini and fried Brussels sprouts are comfort food at its finestâfamiliar, satisfying, and exactly what you want when youâre craving something hearty. Itâs like the 2003 remake of Freaky Fridayâa dish you think you know, but with a little twist that makes it feel fresh and new.
For mains, it's hard to go wrong. Seriously, pick any pizza, and you wonât be disappointed. Itâs like choosing between watching Heat or The Godfatherâyouâre in for a good time no matter which one you pick. The soppressata pizza is a standout, balancing heat and flavor with the ease of Jack Black performing Let's Get It On in the 2000 romantic comedy High Fidelity.
If you're not in the mood for pizza, donât overlook the grilled short rib. Itâs the slow burn of the menuâtender, rich, and worth every moment of anticipation. Think of it like the 2008 Oscar-winning film No Country for Old Menâquietly intense, with a depth that stays with you long after the last bite.
The olive oil cake at Pizzeria Gusto is a revelationâtopped with a dollop of whipped cream and paired with luscious fig jam, the sweetness of the jam perfectly complements the cake's earthy richness, adding a layer of complexity that makes each bite feel indulgent yet light. Itâs like the Little Miss Sunshine of dessertsâunexpected but ultimately unforgettable. The apple bread pudding is a perfect blend of textures and flavors. Soft, spiced apples and custardy bread are topped with a crunchy crumble, toasted pecans, and a rich caramel sauce. Finished with whipped cream, itâs a comforting, sweet finale thatâs hard to beatâlike the satisfying, feel-good ending to a...
Read moreI was absolutely not impressed. The pepperoni pizza said that it had honey-sriracha, and I was given a pie with what tastes like plain tomato sauce. The lamb sausage pie said it contained chipotle sundried tomatoes, not burnt sundried tomatoes. Pepperoni goes ON TOP of the cheese, Gusto. ON TOP. So that it gets crispy, instead of creating a wet surface underneath the cheese that makes all the toppings slide off. And the jam stuff on the lamb sausage pizza was so sweet as to be cloying. This sausage was clearly made with young lamb, and had a delicate flavor that did not stand up to this cloyingly sweet sauce. My roommate had initially ordered the lamb, and I the pepperoni, but we swapped, because I had expected some SPICE out of a pizza that has PEPPERONI AND SRIRACHA. Supposedly. But the spice was utterly anemic, enough that I would say it was nonexistent. And I do usually like sweeter pizzas, with BBQ sauce or balsamic. But after two slices (these pies are small; I would normally eat 3 slices on a pie this size), I just didn't want anymore. It just wasn't good. The crust is tough as shoe leather. I wouldn't recommend eating here if you don't have good dental coverage or enough of an income to bring any tooth issues that arise from eating this.
You have to understand; 99% of people in Oklahoma City were raised here, or whatever, and food here is often a joke. For OKC, average is good and good is amazing. Actual amazing food doesn't really exist in any consistent way. Every now and then you get some gem of a chef cooking up one of these delightfully good concepts at these hip-seeming restaurants, but more often than not, it's some hack cook wannabe, who doesn't know a damned thing about balancing ingredients, flavors, etc. I'm a culinary professional (with a degree in culinary arts) who hails from New Orleans, and I made the idiotic mistake of coming to this god forsaken place for love. Now I'm trapped here in this foodie nightmare, where there's no such thing as a restaurant than genuinely deserves five stars. And this isn't a dig at the locals. It's not their fault they don't have any access to truly good food. This is just me offering my input as someone who does. If you're visiting our sh--hole of a city, drive a little further North on walker and go to Sauce on Paseo. It's... well, it's...
Read moreKeep your belongings VERY CLOSE! Their people steal from guests and management handles it awfully. Employee stole my purse and after confronting her and the night manager that my purse was missing, we went out back to where we were sitting and went the parking lot to see if we could find it (if anyone would have ditched it) I stayed in the back parking lot to continue looking and had ran into the waitress we had at dinner and asked if they have yet to spot it, and asked where the cameras were located. She proceeded to go inside and tell the manager (her best friend) we were harassing her and the manager proceeded to give me a call and rudely tell me I have to leave the property and Iâm not allowed back and if they âhappenâ to find it they will let me know but we are no longer allowed back and then hung up on me. I then continued and made a police report because things were not adding up and were waiting for a call from the owners about them rolling back the cameras to see if they could see anything. I got a call from management saying the waitress came forward with the money from the bag and said she threw everything else in the trash can out back. If you eat here just beware, seems like no one cares and try and hide the fact they are in the wrong when it comes to it. I donât know if they actually told the owners about it because they seem oblivious to what is actually going on there, however I know itâs not their fault but acknowledgement about the situation and to actually feel like they were helping would have definitely been nice. I left it up to police at that point because it was made clear not to come back to...
