A year ago, I gave Dagmar 5 stars because I fell in love with their scones (everything else I tried was excellent, too). The counter service is always helpful. I hadn’t been there for several months, and of course they just reopened from Covid closings. I was very disappointed in the scones this time. I get them frozen & bake them at home, because I don’t live nearby. The fat they used in this batch has obviously changed. These were not the flavorful, light crumbly, yet moist scones I had fallen in love with. So, unbaked, these were smaller in size than before, so I thought, well, same price but smaller product; they’re trying to increase profit. When baked, they flattened out to an oil- soaked, greasy, bland-tasting disappointing excuse for their scone (I suspect they’re experimenting with replacing some or most butter with cheap, unhealthy canola oil). Not what I expected from this previously fine bakery. I understand businesses are always looking to cut costs, but when those cuts effect the quality of the goods, it is not cost effective to loose business. I truly hope they can cut from somewhere that doesn’t effect ingredient/ taste quality, like...
Read moreI heard about Dagmar's desserts on the news one day and decided it would be a nice place to visit. Especially because Dagmar is German, as am I and most of my friends are. So on Wednesday, 8/25/15, 4 German ladies drove for more then 1.5 hrs from Pawtucket, RI to Old Saybrook, CT, and we were so disappointed. The first thing we encountered was that Dagmar's desserts had moved. Alright, we found the new place, we were planning on having coffee and cake/pastries there, but there were no tables or chairs. She does have a counter and will have eventually bar stools. But, what we were all very disappointed when Dagmar refused to let one of the ladies use the facility, after driving for such a long time it was an emergency. It was not worth the trip to go to Dagmar's desserts, but Old Saybrook is very nice and has a lot of...
Read moreAn out-of-towner, I googled "pastries" and wound up here. I've never been more pleased with a search result. Nevermind that the croissant, strudel, danish, plum cake, lark, tort, tart, and gallete were amazing- every staff person was completely attentive to customer needs in a friendly, genuine way that made it a pleasure to shop here. The coffee was great, too- made with care and a perfect complement to the sweets. If that weren't enough, the young lady at the counter handled an ugly situation with such grace, my love for humans is restored. There is hope for us after all! Buy this food! You...
