Big fat Smokey ribs served downhome style with classic picnic sides & juicy BBQ sauces. About the visit: Located off the East end of Benson & the North side of Radial...right next to a park. The building is set-back & looks historical, matching old Benson. Inside was clean & had more room to eat than expected. The Deco was cute & campy like if you dropped in to get BBQ on a fishing trip up North. We were there before & thru dinner rush on hump day. The take-out in this place is enormous. That being said I was happy we came early...because everyone stands in line & orders up front & it's all "Buisness". The staff are nice but clearly it helps to grab a menu ahead of ordering & know what you are going to order (for your sake & theirs). We shared a Full Slab Rib Dinner that comes with 2 sides, cornbread & chips for 50cnts xtra. Also we ordered 2 more sides & fountain drinks. They also have bottles. The (Baby back) pork ribs were very thick (like beef), dry & Smokey with a crisp exterior & very chewy to the bone. It works well because you can have as much BBQ sauce (serve yourself) as you want. All were Very Good! I preferred the mild (thick & bold) with the sweet (light with honey). The green beans were like Del Monte...but I liked them. The baked beans were really delightful with baked apples & a lighter sauce which tasted really fresh. A drunken bean I'd say. My spouse said the potato salad was OK but the coleslaw was fantastic with mustard & celery seed. The chips are fun salty bites between eating everything. Ribs & sides were served Hot which we appreciate! The cakey warm cornbread is wonderful...but comes individually in baggies & is tiny. We ordered more, but it was forgotten & didn't want to hold them up. When we saw how it was served we got the impression they don't make enough because let me tell you...It was tasty. Also they give you packets of 100% honey...that is a bonus! Overall...we will come back to try sandwiches. Those looked great too. These ribs you have to try. They are "Campfire" tasting Smokey ribs...lots of meat. Dry. But can be loaded with very tasty sauces!!! A crowd pleaser Obviously.

**My personal and honest opinion about this place. If you have similar tastebuds like myself, then this review is for you.** The atmosphere around here is so cozy and heartwarming. Felt like a wonderful family owned restaurant. The service was great, asked questions and verified our order to make sure we were properly taken care of. Biggest thing about restaurants when you’re new to the place is service and they knocked that off the park. Price was decent but you get what you pay for. It’s BBQ, takes time, dedication and good preparation to make BBQ taste delicious. In total I payed just about 32$ for 2 sandwiches and 2 drinks with tip included. 7-9$ plus tax for sandwiches depending on meat and 3$ for drinks (home made lemonades) plus tax. Now on to the real deal, the food itself. The only reason I gave it 3 stars was because the meat really did not taste like it was smoked. I ordered a brisket sandwich. The bread, delicious, I love how they toasted it and added a little butter. Just adds that extra delicious kick to blend perfectly with the meat. However, the brisket itself, as I stated before, was missing that smoke flavor. Almost like it was made in the oven. It was super juicy and tender, can’t complain about that, but it was just missing that smokey kick. I’d definitely try this place again and give it a second try. The service was amazing, atmosphere was great and food is good, not great, but good and definitely worthy of a second go. That’s my honest intake.

This BBQ joint definitely has heart so Heartland is an appropriate name. One of the owners and her daughter was working the counter the day we got in. The brisket sandwich impressed my friends a lot, but didn't like the chopped dried bits. They ended up bringing us out some of their brisket (not diced) and that was delicious. I've noticed when it comes to BBQ, texture wise I need moisture. I'm not a huge fan of dry. The ribs were the best texture out of the 3 places we went (we did a mini Omaha BBQ tour that day). Super fatty with loose easy meat, but I didn't detect much of a smoky flavor. I'm also a huge smoke person. The sides were ok here. Beans and coleslaw were the top. The potato salad was a bit bland for me, but it might be too others tastes. I gave this a 5 because the service was amazing. You can tell they really care about what they do. My 5 means I would love to return Still lots to try on the menu. There is a parking lot for easy access. This was also the brightest and most comfortable dine in of the 3 places we visited that day.

Very very disappointed in being scammed out of a 20% tip. My 70 year old brother in law went in ordered 2 sandwiches and 2 sides comes out and bill was $58. I called and was told price, I I'm ok with that I guess inflation. When I got home I looked at the receipt closer and realized they put a $9.80 tip on there I asked my brother-in-law about it he said I didn't know how to work the machine I asked her how to work the machine he didn't want to leave a tip she told him what button to push to complete the transaction but didn't explain to him about the tip that if you don't hit no tip it automatically puts 20% on that is fraud. I told her I wanted to tip back that I wasn't paying a tip for someone to hand me my food over a counter that I came in and ordered at the counter I don't believe in tipping for that pay their wages now if I was getting table service I would tip more than 20% she told me it's not her fault my brother-in-law couldn't understand it and she wasn't going to give me the tip back if she said she already paid it out. I understand now why they only had one table in there at 12:30 in the afternoon. I freak with that place a lot I'm handicapped now so I couldn't go in myself in order I told her that cuz she said why did I send my brother law in if he couldn't read the screen I told her I was handicapped she said that's not her problem I will give them some more free advertising I'm going to call Mike McKnight and have them investigated and I'm going to call my bank and stop the payment on that tip.I called twice to complain she called me back and told me if I called her again she was going to call the police and charged me with harassment I told her to please keep the video of all the transaction because she's going to need it when Mike McKnight investigates sorry Harlan BBQ I hear you have new owners and that's the problem because the old owners work there for years and we're very customer service oriented. The biggest problem is you stated you helped him by showing him the correct button to push to complete transaction. You must of skipped over what to hit on tipping. You see if you don't hit the no tip button it puts in the 20% tip automatically . It is wrong to have a screen that pops up to tip in a place you walk into place your order wait at counter for food. And when a customer requests that tip be removed your answer was " I can't do that I already paid that money out" it may be only $9.50 to you but when I paid $50.00 for lunch there adding that amount on a fixed income hurt. I will get my money back calling the bank and in the end you lost money. Were regular customers. And again you should never have that screen asking for tips. Your a self serve restaurant and customer will give a small tip if THEY choose, not because you suggest it before a...

I visited for an after funeral lunch with friends at Hartland BBQ. I ordered the BBQ Pork Sandwich with a side of Potato Salad. I asked the counter staff if the Potato Salad was house made and was assured that it was. Let's start with the Sandwich. It was pleasingly large and the pulled pork was generously heaped on the soft heated bun. I do enjoy a buttered and grilled bun for that lovely crisp inside a soft bun texture but they don't do that and the bun was soft and fresh so not an issue. The BBQ Sauce came in three choices, mild, sweet or hot. I chose mild and it came in two very small sealed cups, very small. I found myself wanting more sauce as it was just not enough for the size of the sandwich. Overall, the sandwich was good and hit the spot. Let's discuss the $2.00 "house made" Potato Salad. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. The potatoes were cut way too large, were way undercooked, I think there might have been egg whites in it as I ran across some rubbery slices of something and the dressing was exactly the dressing you'd expect when eating Potato Salad from a tub in the take out section of a grocery store. I highly doubt that this Potato Salad was "house made". I was looking forward to tasting a first class Potato Salad side that complimented the BBQ sandwich and was very disappointed. Note to owner, really great Potato Salad is easy to make, please make the effort as the side dish supports and compliments the main star of the plate. Finally, I ordered water as I don't drink soft drinks, asked for ice tea and found that the only ice tea that they offer is from the soda fountain. I suggest that brewed ice tea would be a good investment for this establishment as more and more folks forgo sugary drinks in favor of healthier options. Overall, I give them three stars. The BBQ is good, as good as any I've had at similar places, they would benefit from easier access to additional BBQ Sauce like bottles on tables, but they lost me with the Potato Salad side and the lack of brewed Ice tea. Would I return? Maybe, to grab BBQ meat by the pound but not for a full meal. The good news, they could fix these issues and do alot better. I...
