I really love the atmosphere at The Mill. However, there are problems with this particular location that I have not experienced with those in Lincoln:
The friendliness of the baristas are hit-or-miss. I have literally been chastised on two occasions when asking for a drink to be remade due to an order being screwed-up. On other occasions, some of the employees there don't seem interested in being there. The disinterested employees (at the registers) will serve a person, then go do something else that is unnecessary at the time (like wipe a counter, or talk to a fellow employee) while the line stands waiting. I understand that it's not the most glamorous job, but if one is going to be in something requiring good customer service, then embrace it.
As others have mentioned, the parking situation is not good at this location, especially on the weekends. One has to find off-street parking at busier times. I am actually surprised at the location of this Mill, because it's not in the best area (parking aside). Regardless, point #3 is most important:
The quality of the coffee, or at least those varieties I order, are AWFUL as of late. I can't pinpoint when this started happening, but it is so inconsistent that I refuse to frequent this place anymore despite the cool atmosphere/vibe (when I do happen to go in). I order almond or oat-milk lattes and/or mochas, all the time, whether it be from The Mill, or elsewhere. Recently, such drinks I have ordered (usually through the drive-through) have one or more of the following issues: a) The coffee tastes so burnt that it cuts through everything. b) The "lattes" I order look like they filled it with half coffee half milk, and then added a shot of vanilla, or whatever flavoring I wanted, and called it square. It's awful, and more often than not, their lattes and/or mochas look and taste like this. (No froth or mixing) c) So.. MANY TIMES I receive whole/cow milk instead of the oat or almond. C'mon.. I don't have to say anything else, here. And to make matters worse.. d) The prices have gone up. Not that I care much if my 16oz latte costs $1 more than it did a few months ago, but when it tastes like fertilizer on top of that? No good..
I am done with this place. I'll frequent Astute coffee, Bad Seed coffee, or some other local establishment that isn't Starbucks or Scooters.
Edited to add: The owners replied to me below and state that the prices have not gone up in two years?? I don't remember two oat-milk lattes costing $15 when it first opened up. Maybe, I am wrong about that. As for the neighborhood? They "LOVE" it? Okay.. we'll just leave that to a matter of taste. Maybe the Legend Comics across the street adds the charm, or the Galls uniform building, which is literally attached to The Mill. Or maybe it's the narrow entrance as one hangs a right off of Leavenworth to get to the drive-through (due to angled parking on either side), and the fact that The Mill doesn't have a sign to indicate, "hey, turn in here to access our drive-through". But you know which sign is at that turn? The one for Galls. But I digress..
The quality, especially as pertains to consistency, is currently poor. It seems as if you have new employees. I get it. However, when the consistency leans more towards "bad" than "good" drinks, I...
Read moreIt's sort of a disappointment when you can no longer make any critique or comment these days without being viewed as difficult as a customer. I do like the Mill, It has a wonderfully young friendly staff and nice products. I've been going for several months and have received nothing but friendliness until the day I decided to make a comment on the green tea and was received with a kind of shocking and sharp rebuke.
I get the green tea to go and the cup is full to the top with ice, and by the time I take maybe 4 or 5 sips the tea is gone. So I decided one day to ask for light ice, and it seems that was just unreasonable to staff? I was told multiple times that they have a recipe and they can't really do light ice? I wasn't asking for a full cup of just green tea, I just simply wanted to stop spending over $4 for a cup of what was mostly ice.
I think that in this day of canceling each other and of Karen's, we become afraid to voice any of our needs. Any business is a relationship between two entities: the serving side and the customer side. I think that customer should feel safe to voice their comments when they are providing a place with their business.
I also fully understand the staff doesn't make the recipes or the rules, but sometimes they are the bridge between the customer and upper management and they are the only ones that customer has access to to voice comments.
With that being said, after the multiple rude replies to saying I can't get light ice...I now feel too uncomfortable to go back. I did really like their products and the venue. As a former barista, And as a former young person (lol), staff of the Mill: please do not view any customer critiques or comments as an affront or assault against you directly...
Read moreMy fiance and I have been patrons of The Mill on Leavenworth for just under a year. Everytime I would patronize their establishment, I was met with courtesy, with the exception of one time. I shrugged that off as just being a staff issue with them being new. I felt like we had a new neighborhood coffee place that is cozy and a fun tradition. Well, NO MORE!! Today, was the last day I will every go back to that place. The manager there was extremely rude and disrespectful and the barista was very cold and didn't seem to know what they were doing. My card had plenty of money on the card and it declined. They told me there wasn't enough money on it. We noticed on our phone alert that it said it was an incorrect CVV. Well, that was an error on the part of the barista. I said "I don't why that would be, as there is again, enough money on the card." I asked them to run the card again and they said it would be a waste of time. I then said "I'm sure other people have come in here and their cards have been declined before," and the manager's reply was "Well sir their cards probably have money on them." Wow. I replied in a very disgusted fashion "What??" That was met with "Sir, you are being very rude and if you continue, you will not be allowed back in here again." So, I was being the rude one?! I replied "I have given you a lot of business, just say the word and I will not come back here again." She turned away in a huff. So, is this how your employees are trained-to take our money but treat us with complete and utter disrespect?! Is this the new norm? You have just lost a good customer's business, we hope...
