Looking for an Italian meal on night 2 of a monthlong road trip. Selected Romio's because it had what looked like a good and varied menu to choose from.
After a brief wait, which went from "about 20 minutes" to perhaps 3, we were seated in a booth. A large family gathering had caused the seating to be rearranged (this group looked to be about 20 adults and kids). Our server was Tamara, who was also leading the evening's operations. She did not disappoint in her guidance on food and life at the restaurant.
Our drinks were an iced tea and glass of Merlot. Both rediculously priced low - but as we saw on the menu, everything was low relative to the obnoxious prices in our home state of California and likely what the market of eastern Oregon would bear.
My wife ordered a half greek salad and I ordered for the both of us a large Traditional Romeos Special Pizza. I can say the 1/2 salad was massive and the pizza large enough for 3 people - which meant leftovers. The pizza was excellent and reminded me of the quality of the pizza's obtained in my youth from the Little Italy area in San Diego - pizza oven baked, generous toppings and real mozzarella cheese on a quality dough base.
While we were almost stuffed, we looked at the dessert menu and opted for the Romio's Ice Cream Potato. Tamara broke the news that those were all gone that evening. Too, we went down to the second item on the dessert menu, the Romio's Mud Pie. Tamara said that was available, but warned us it was large. The "yeah, right" thought went through my head.
About 3 minutes later, Tamara arrives at the table with what would be a serving the equivalent size of 1/8 a Toyota Prius tire. This serving was huge. I would estimate it was 10-11" high, 9-10' radius, and across the arc about the same. The taste was very good, with whipped cream, nuts and a cherry on top. Tamara gave us some advice - eat it from the sides inward and she could box up the left overs. So, with laughter, we shaved portions off the sides with our spoons. We were so caught up with our efforts that we did not notice that the restaurant had emptied out and we actually were eating post closing time.
So after realizing we were actually fully, we had Tamara box the treat to go with our box of left over pizza.
We received the bill, which again, relative to home, seemed like we were stealing from the restaurant.
We ended up talking to our various travel mates we met up with over the next few days about the outstanding food and service and made it clear when we return to Ontario, we will also...
Read moreI love eating at Romio's. They are the first place I ever found where I could trust the servers to really help me find gluten free food. They serve delicious food that everyone in my family enjoys.
They offer great pizza, soups, calzones, and many pasta dishes, plus yummy desserts. Wednesday is my favorite day to eat at Romio's because they offer Creamy Chicken and Rice Soup, which is the only gluten free soup I ever ate that I didn't have to cook myself.
The servers are fabulous. They are kind, attentive, and trained really well so they can help patrons avoid allergens or just things you dislike.
The inside of the restaurant is cozy and unique with creative seating and unique lighting. The menu is a blend of Greek and Italian with local favorites among the dessert options. Jazz plays gently from hidden speakers, unless you are lucky enough to be there when live musicians perform.
I highly recommend Romio's, though it is a popular place and parking can be limited. There is a big parking lot half a block to the east if you don't want to parallel park out front. You can also get takeout, which I do sometimes when I really want the soup but don't have time to...
Read moreI want to start by saying that the pizza here is excellent and we stop here every time we come through Ontario. However tonight was a very poor experience. We ordered a medium pepperoni and two small make your own pizzas. For a Friday night the restaurant was very quiet and it still took over an hour for our pizzas to come out. Our medium pepperoni came out as a small cheese pizza. Our server did take it back to have it remade after I showed her my receipt which I appreciated but when it came back out it was clearly the same small cheese pizza that they had thrown pepperoni on and put back in the oven for a couple minutes. I’m not sure if this was a kitchen decision or an owner decision but it was very disappointing as we paid the price of the medium pizza. One of the small make your own pizzas was also missing a topping. Our servers were very sweet and did their best but it’s clear that the other reviews mentioning the owner issues have merit. Romio’s of Ontario can be great but approach...
