I went to Pop Thai for Sunday lunch, and the experience was really enjoyable. They have a really nice hot ginger tea, as well as other hot teas and the standard sodas. We tried the spring rolls and the ebi roll- spring rolls were really hot and crunchy like they'd just come out of the frier, and the ebi roll was really tasty and fresh, with a nice crunch from all the veggies. We ordered some sushi rolls, a red shrimp curry, a Thai paradise (fried fish with green curry), and a salmon and avocado salad. The presentation on all of the dishes was beautiful, and everything was fresh and well prepared. The shrimp were great because they weren't over cooked, and were quite juicy. I would definitely come back here, although if you're looking for really authentically spicy Thai food, you'll have to specify that you want the heat - otherwise I would say the dishes are definitely adapted for western tastes/palates. They do have different heat levels, so you can ask for something spicier, so it's a great option if you're going with a group of people of varied taste buds since you should be able to ask them to adapt the dishes accordingly.
The staff were really kind, and they checked up on us and cleared plates we left to the corner of the table. We didn't try any desserts this time, but their list looked interesting, and I would like to try their mango sticky rice next time (although that is seasonal, so it's not...
Read moreI decided not to take my phone into the restaurant so no pictures on this review… sorry but I will say pop Thai has a nice, warm and welcoming feeling when you enter. They were very attentive to us and reminded us the kitchen was closing in case we wanted to order anymore food or desert which I thought was very thoughtful. I has the Stars and Stripes roll and the JB roll. I didn’t like the taste of warm cream cheese on the JB roll. I know it was a fried roll but I guess having hot cream cheese was an afterthought. The stars and strips was very tasty except they didn’t leave the tuna nice square pieces. They beat the tuna here. When I say that I mean they cut it and cut it and chop it until it’s mush. I feel that it takes the integrity away from the fish and doesn’t taste the same. The appetizer combo A was delicious and the mango sake was perfect. #tryit
Update: pop Thai is doing great. I had the Stars and Stripes again and my boyfriend told me I didn’t complain about the mushy tuna. It was good. This time we had the fried gyozas which where delicious and not greasy. My boyfriend ordered the drunken rice and omg…. Delicious!!!! I couldn’t pin what I was tasting. Maybe mint leaves or ginger but it wasn’t like this greasy nasty rice I usually get from my local Asian place. The meat was tender, the peppers were cooked but still crunchy. Which was great cause who like mushy...
Read moreI will preface this review by simply saying that the Crispy Panang Duck is well worth the trip. While the entree is pricey, it comes with a sampler of soup, peanut salad and vegetable dumplings, and the portion of duck that is the main entree is very generous. The sauce is spicy like panang should be, with a sweet taste from something like peanut sauce mixed in; pair that with the crispiness of the duck and this is easily my favorite thing from Pop Thai. I have also had the green curry with chicken, which is excellent, as well.
The one thing that keeps me from giving a better star rating is that the heat scale is never accurate; on my first visit I ordered both the duck and the curry, getting the duck hot and the curry medium, and the curry was definitely spicier than the duck. On my second visit I got the duck hot again, but barely tasted any heat from it at all. The decor here is clean and inviting, not too bright inside the restaurant, and the staff has been top-notch every visit.
For people that are wasting their time comparing this new restaurant to Yum-mi Sandwiches that occupied the space previously, this is a full Thai food menu restaurant and Yum-mi was a Vietnamese sandwich shop, and I hardly see any reason for...
