MENU: 3 stars. I was initially very pleased in stumbling across Pig Floyd’s. I simply was not in the mood to eat at another chain. The items on the menu sounded delicious and were very competitively priced. I was pretty excited to try out the brisket. And while it had a pretty good taste, it disappointed me. The marinade was too strong on some pieces and not strong enough on others. The green beans were categorically unbearable: way too salty and buttery. I will admit the fried yuca was good. For as long as I can remember, the way I’ve been able to discern if what I ate was of poor quality is how my stomach feels afterward. I typically eat very healthy and my body will reveal to me if I’ve strayed too far from my normal diet. After this meal at Pig Floyd’s, my stomach was groaning and squealing and aching until the morning; do the math. If I do return (long shot) I will probably try something else besides the brisket and icky vegetables.
MOOD: 5 stars. I love the mood around Pig Floyd’s. It’s very eclectic and hipster-ish. The entire Mills 50 district is very trendy and chic, so this restaurant follows suit quite well. The decor is a little rustic, the outdoor seating provides a nice romantic backdrop, and the 2000s pop playlist blaring through the speakers was a welcome addition.
STAFF: 4 stars. The staff seemed pretty nice for the most part. I’ve been on a no-sugar diet for a few weeks and was searching for a meal at Pig Floyd’s without barbecue sauce or sugar. I didn’t understand when the cashier told me that all of their meats’ dry rub contains sugar, because why would dry rub contain sugar? The cashier was a little stern and impatient at my inability to understand an admittedly seemingly basic concept, but still, I could’ve done without her mini-attitude. This one blunder aside, the rest of the staff was top-shelf, with several other waiters and the manager asking us about our satisfaction level.
TL; DR VERDICT: 4 stars. I probably won’t be back unless I’m forced to by my party because the food does not appear to be of great quality, but the mood is fantastic and the staff gets the job done so I recommend at least finding out for yourselves if Pig Floyd’s...
Read moreTL,DR: Pig Floyd's is a mediocre barbecue place with rather cringey and tasteless atmosphere, but good service-- and hey, the beans were nice! When you first enter Pig Floyd's, you will be greeted with thumping hip hop music, turned up just a little bit too loud to be comfortable. The restaurant is clearly based around being "urban" (a decision that caused me to question their decision to name it after Pink Floyd, a decidedly not hip hop artist), but most of the decor comes off insincere, like a bad high school choir teacher desperately trying to appear hip to teenagers. The food was out very soon after we ordered, demonstrating the great service that, if nothing else, is something the restaurant can boast about. However, if you come here and order the cheesesteak, please don't make the same mistake as me-- you will not be receiving a Philly cheesesteak. The meat was almost certainly not an actual steak, bearing a striking resemblance to pot roast or pulled pork, and the cheese was nigh undetectable. The bun also had a rather dry and crumbly texture. The fries, which I paid an extra dollar for so they could be included in my meal, also disappointed. They appeared to be seasoned with the classic curly fry style seasoning, but were actually flavored with something more akin to the barbecue dust that adorns commercial potato chips. It was not very pleasant. However, the black beans and rice my companion had were good, bringing the food score from one up to a whopping two stars. All in all, I recommend you not waste your money here. The music and theming create a rather uncomfortable and vaguely embarrassing dining experience, and the food doesn't come close to redeeming it. The owners should probably focus more on improving their food than finding more rap lyrics to adorn their walls. There are a myriad of delectable mom and pop diners, straight up barbecue joints, and other restaurants that would be a much better use of your...
Read morePig's was great!
We ordered the ribs, brisket, pork belly banh mi, street corn fries, and basically one of every side.
The meats were both well seasoned and cooked well. Brisket was superior to the ribs. Juicy and the good kind of fatty, as it should be. Ribs were good, but for $27 for a half rack, I'd pass on them next time. BBQ sauces made in house and also tasty.
Pork belly banh mi was good, the roll wasn't a traditional roll for this style of sandwich and the carrots were similar to coleslaw carrots but shorter, which I also wasn't used to. Pork belly was cubed and dry with a sauce on it, which I think ultimately took away from the traditional banh mi flavor. There's definitely a lot better versions of this sandwich offered for a better price down the road, so you can skip it here.
Street corn fries appetizer was awesome. The fries were perfect for the application of toppings, the cilantro aioli was amazing, the ketchup / mayo sauce for dipping was great, and the toppings on the fries were generously and evenly distributed. Everyone loved them, highly recommend.
Sides were all mostly good, the slaw and corn were the stand outs. Beans and rice and the green beans were good. Yuca fries were definitely a pass.
My only real complaint was that the app and the rest of the food all arrived immediately upon sitting down. Not a big deal, but normally it's staggered. Also, some of the dishes felt rushed as they came out in roughly 2 minutes. What I mean by rushed is, had they been given a little more time and love, they'd of been even better.
Overall, Pig's was a good experience and I'd recommend them to anyone wanting some BBQ with a twist in the area. Thanks for the...
