Another local legend in the books for me. I don't know why it took me so long to come here, but in terms of word-of-mouth, this place is like in the top five of popularity. So I grabbed some friends and went to see what this place was all about.
Ambiance is very good. It's like a Hispanic dive bar. Very tight and comfy and with very fun artwork all over the walls. It's counter service, and has an open kitchen. Very nice employees all around, and you can see the gang having fun in the kitchen, just creating a good vibe.
As for the food, well, it was out of this world. There are 10 main tacos on their menu, so we ordered one of each, of course. Because if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing.
The menu said that these are corn tortillas, but there's something special about these corn tortillas. They act like flour tortillas. They are very soft and fold very well. I didn't have one break on me the whole time. Very good tortillas.
As for the fillings, they really give you great bang for your buck. The tortillas are filled up and couldn't get any fuller honestly. High quality stuff. Every ingredient tasted very vibrant and fresh.
And unlike other taco shops that just give you different combinations of the same eight ingredients five at a time, this place has unique ingredients for each one of their 10 tacos. Something small, and maybe not everyone would notice, but I noticed, and I thank the Black Rooster.
Looking back, I couldn't possibly remember all of the tacos and describe all of them, but I will highlight some things.
The Chicken Tinga was the biggest surprise for how good it was compared to initial predictions. The Atlantic cod in the Crispy Fish taco was amazing. It's a fatty enough fish to really be something substantial. Don't sleep on their vegetarian options. Their smoked kale was omg, mind blowingly good.
I finished up with a Tres Leches Cake (3 milk soaked sponge cake). This was ok. If you're a tres leches fan, but don't want to order too many tacos, for fear of not having room for dessert, just get the taco.
Overall, I understand now. This place was amazing. It's not even fair how much better it is over all other taco...
Read moreIN DEPTH REVIEW: The menu is also VERY limited. The majority of the food was so average or just bad I was disappointed. Some items are decent if you still wanna come. I came because of the glowing reviews but I don't know what tacos those people had in Orlando. I'll rate what we ordered. There were two tacos that I'd recommend, and that's it.
Nachos w pinto beans- 4/10 If I'm ordering nachos from a restaurant, I don't wanna taste something I can make at home. There was no special sauce, nothing just nacho shells, cheese, (not even good cheese), unflavorful guac, and some beans and tomatos thrown on it. It was super average and for 10 dollars not worth it. Get something else.
Service was good, the waiters were nice and checked in on us.
Chicken Tinga Tacao- 5/10. The most bland chicken tinga I've ever had. Not even a kick to them. Usually chicken Tinga is shredded and juicy this was some pieces of meat with barely any sauce. It was just too much greens and very little meat. Veggie taco with a side of chicken.
Beef Brisket Taco- 7/10. This was actually pretty decent and had some flavor to it, it was actually pulled and had some kind of juices that made it good.
Fish Mahi Mahi Taco - 7/10. It was fried fish, good crunch and the fish felt fresh. This was actually good as well BUT BARELY any sauce on the fish, just like some kind of pinkish sauce but barely anything else. Again, just threw in a bunch of veggies without much sauce or variety to it.
Carne Asada Taco- 2/10. I think this is actually the worst Carne Asada tacos I ever had. There was not a good flavor, actually whatever it tasted like, wasn't good. Had a weird cow taste, I can't explain it I know it's cow, but it tasted gamey. Carne Asada is usually the best tacos most places have, not this place though.
Drinks: Agua Fresca- 10/10. Very good actually. Flavorful, refreshing.
Dessert: Was too scared to order after the multiple disappointments.
Sitting arrangements, They have this BIG table right in front of the cashier. If you try sitting towards the wall, the chairs are super hard to move and pull out in order for you to sit down because it's too close...
Read moreTacos were great. Like really really good... but cost too much $$$....
Went there with my fiance for a quick bite. We ordered one drink, 3 tacos (steak, pork fat, and chicken), fried plantains and guacamole.
Overall Taste: 5 stars easily. These are some seriously good tacos 🌮🌮🌮 Guacamole was fresh and probably one of the better guacamole recipes you will find in Orlando. However their chips are mad salty...
I had the steak and pork fat tacos which were delicious. They tasted similar to tacos I used to eat growing up. She had the chicken, which she said was good but nothing amazing.
Plantains were normal fried plantains (which we love).
Hibiscus tea was a little weird. Definitely won't be ordering that again.
Overall, there were some great flavors. But why 4 stars? Surely the tea wasn't that bad and the chips that salty? No, I wouldn't take away a star for that.
The price on the other hand... For the food I listed above, we spent nearly 30 dollars which is kind of ridiculous for "street tacos".
Guac was 6 bucks which I'll say is fair considering how good it was and how much they give you.
Plantains I think were 3 bucks for like 6 or 7 decent sized pieces which isn't too bad considering how much most places charge you... But full disclosure, I buy plantains to cook at home and it's usually $1.00 for 3 or 4 of them... Some other places will charge you like 3 or 4 bucks for what comes out to 1/3 of a plaintain... At least here I'm getting about 1 plaintain which is pretty fair because as a business, they obviously need profit margins.
Pretty fair I think except the tacos. "Street tacos" shouldnt cost 4 bucks each!!! More like 1.50 or 2 bucks... Half of our bill was 3 tacos... Three. Tres. A trio. Dang man... That's intense especially since I could have easily eaten 3 by myself...
I could bought an entire steak Chipotle burrito bowl WITH guac AND chips for that price... Or I could have bought half of Taco Bells inventory...
So while they embraced the street taco tastes and flavors, they definitely did not embrace the street taco pricing.
Call it whatever you want, but at the end of the day, a taco...
