SpicyOne on 119th Street in Overland Park has quite a few things to sort out, in my opinion. Here's my sincere review:
Food: I had the Rendang Daging. A friend of mine who is Indonesian ate at SpicyOne some time ago and said that the food was "lacking," so in the hopes of making my food experience better, I specifically ordered an extra spicy Rendang. The lady taking the order said she would give me a spicy sauce on the side. That sauce did not make it to the table until after I had already finished. I would have understood if in-house service was busy when I came in, but it was not. All they could say was a limp "sorry" and "I forgot. Maybe next time." That is a big assumption that there would be a "next time." Neither the meat nor the small amount of sauce nor the rice nor the vegetables on my plate had been exceptional.
Serving size: Too small. It was three pieces of beef with a small amount of sauce, a scoop of rice, and a small amount of vegetable (broccoli and onion). This was the serving size that I used to eat when I was a ten-year-old who did not like to eat much. I even considered having a second meal somewhere else after eating at SpicyOne, because their serving size was not filling to me at all.
Price: WAY overpriced for the serving size and the taste of the food. I was also turned off by how the menu stated that the price of the Rendang was $15, but I was charged $17. I did not even initially notice this, and the lady who took the order and ran my card at the register did not say anything. I remembered that I had forgotten to include a tip, so I asked to have the check back, and that's when I noticed that I had been charged $17 (with tax, it was $18.55). The lady then said that prices of goods are crazy, and that's why they are now charging more than the price stated on the menu. Of course I paid, but I thought this increase in price without prior notice was a little... well, the opposite of forthcoming.
Service: The two people at the restaurant were pleasant enough, but there's more to service than being outwardly nice. There's efficiency, accuracy of information, attention, and empathy towards the customer. There is an art to caring about the business through caring for the customer, and SpicyOne did not show me that. They did not even try to make amends for the subpar service by, say, offering a small token like a free drink or dessert. When I lived in a different city, I had a friend who was a restaurant owner who made fantastic business, because he was generous and caring towards his customers, and they kept coming back. I can't count the number of times he had sent me home with a free iced tea refill to-go, only for me to come back the next day and the day after that and many more days and weeks and months and years after that, whether to eat something there or get something to-go or order his food to bring to parties, telling everybody all about him and his restaurant. From what I've seen from his example, if you are kind and caring towards your customers, they will help you take care of your business. The service that I received from SpicyOne, in my opinion, was so far below this kind of service.
Ambience: The place looks nice and clean and with nice music. It's the only good thing I can say about SpicyOne at this point.
Overall: After my visit, I thought to myself that if SpicyOne gave customers the same experience as the one I had today, I would not be surprised if they didn't last long in business. I would love to have a great Indonesian restaurant in Overland Park. That restaurant is not SpicyOne. At least...
Read moreThe food was okay (everything is Halal except turkey leg). Nothing mind-blowing. But it did seem a little overpriced for the amount of food you get. (8$ for 5 small egg wraps??)The previous reviews said otherwise, though. Also, the food was nothing like its description. We ordered- fried chicken noodles(17$) 6/10, it was supposed to have eggs, tomatoes, cucumbers and what not and topped with fried shallots, but as you can see it was nothing like that. Rendang with spicy beef (17$)- 6/10, it was not really spicy, and they reduced the amount of rice and added cabbage and carrots, which did not taste great. So we were a little bumped. Egg wraps - 5/10. The reviews and pictures were so good that we were really tempted to try this place. It was our first time trying indonesian food, too, and we drove for 45 min to get there. Anyone reading this should know that currently, the food and amount is nothing like what it used be probably (atleast thats what I understood from reading the previous reviews) Go at your own discretion. But at least they did have Halal food, which is great👍 . The girl waiting on us was nice and friendly. She tried to answer our questions as best she could, but she was new though, so she just didn't know a lot of things. But...
Read moreIncredible, authentic Indonesian cuisine. My husband and I went for my birthday. I ordered Nasi Goreng Ayam (chicken fried rice) and he got Mie Goreng Ayam (similar to a chicken lo mein). We split the Satay Ayam, which is grilled chicken on a stick with peanut sauce. The rice with the satay was DELICIOUS. They brought some sambal/salsa and pickle which were both fresh and tasty too! The owner was wonderful and helpful in choosing what to order as well! She even brought us a complimentary dessert and wished me happy birthday. The cake was like Terang Bulan, it was very light and airy, drizzled in brown sugar. Immaculate. My husband ordered a coffee and said it was one of the best he has ever had: foamy, rich, sweet, and dark. It smelled so comforting. The restaurant itself was clean, welcoming, had lots of natural light and art on the walls, and the bathroom was clean and had a baby changing table. Overall I think they did an amazing job and I will eat there again and recommend to my...
