Arrived with an appetite and soon after discovered when walking through the door that the staff has little time to seat you personally, however that is not a negative in the slightest, your not left standing in a crowded waiting area meant for 8, currently holding a corral of 12 people, you soon understand that the next available spot you see is yours for the taking, as you sit everything within your eyes reach from the coffee maker to the bar bench and countertop is purpose built, no frills, excessive decorations, or overly enthusiastic waiters or waitresses, that's not to say they aren't pleasant and easy going, there's an atmosphere of heritage as portrayed by the diners history on it's much informative "throughout the years" wall displaying the many people who walked through this eatery's doors, celebrities, football coaches, families, and ordinary people such as yourself that is reading this right now, you look around and you don't see a diner that falls into the age old marketing trick nowadays which is making the place look "retro" or "old fashioned" you take a close look around and you realize it hasn't changed much from what seems like decades ago, it looks really retro because it is, giving a whole new meaning to " if it ain't broke don't fix it" the food is nothing to write home about, (but) it doesn't have to be, the eggs are just eggs not great not Terrible, the thick cut ham is just that, ham that's cut thick, the coffee will taste black if you have it black and creamy if you take it with cream, nothing about this place screams exuberance or in style, it's not a place you seek out for "the gram" this place is simply a by the books, well oiled machine that happens to serve food, you order quick and before you know it your foods out before you can stretch your legs and pop your joints, it's unremarkable like a diamond in the rough, it stands the test of time and that's saying something nowadays. I usually come here when I want to be alone in thought or collect my thoughts from the previous day, just accompanied by some eggs ham and coffee is all. Some of the most special people places or things are unremarkable, you could drive by it dozens of times a week and not know it existed, I know I did, by it's very nature of being unremarkable you can be glad that your among a group who actually has had the pleasure to sit down in one of...
Read moreGood pancakes and omelette, but the shakes were expensive and had a chalky undertone. For breakfast I had the 3 cheese and mushroom omelette and added tomatoes and avocado to it, with a side of hash browns and a side of corned beef hash. My husband ordered the breakfast special, which came with 2 pancakes, 2 eggs (he got them scrambled), and 2 slices of bacon and also asked for some toast. Our 4yo son got the kid's French toast which came with eggs and bacon also. The omelette was tasty and the hash browns tasted great and were done correctly. The corned beef tasted fresh from a can, but then I probably shouldn't have high expectations for a side like corned beef hash. My husband said the pancakes were slightly above average. He's not a big egg fan and the scrambled eggs were pretty boring. I tried some of the bacon - it tasted ok, but I'm very particular with bacon - I want it to crumble in my fingers from crispy-ness, but the crunchy parts on this bacon were tough to chew. For what it's worth, the bacon did feel slightly thicker than what you get at other restaurants, and it had a good/average flavor, but it was just tough to chew. My husband tried some of the French toast and said they tasted average. Nothing spectacular about them - they were just decent. The kid's plate was a bit large for a small kid - my husband felt like our son got more eggs than he did on his full-sized plate.
We wound up getting a banana milkshake and a mint chocolate chip milkshake. I probably would've been happier if I got a root beer float. The milkshakes were around $8 each, which given the flavor was far overpriced. The banana shake tasted like vanilla ice cream with light chalky banana flavoring mixed into it, and the mint chocolate chip milkshake kinda tasted like minty Pepto bismol after 4 drinks of it. My husband said the mint chocolate chip shake was as bad as I thought it was, but it also wasn't so great either, which was really my fault for ordering something so strange.
Overall decent breakfast, nice old-world feel, and good service - just skip the milkshakes cause they're...
Read moreThis is a find in the land of modern kitsch, this authentic piece of the 50's is unique. The counter has the surface design rubbed off from years of elbows and dishes. The food is plentiful and plain. Breakfast is huge, pancakes like hubcaps. HashBrowns with a crispy crust and soft and delicious inside. Eggs over-easy are. Bacon is crisp. The hash looks exactly like hash in a dinner should look.
It is not 50's prices, but heck this place sits on the major route though the Coachella Valley, and even if no one has spent much in modernizing it, it is a piece of history preserved. Butter is scooped from a 5 gallon vat. Coffee is hot and good. The napkin is, well, pretty flimsy, but then what did you expect.
We saw plates with omelets covered in sauce so big you wonder how the server held them aloft. They tell me its a long wait on the weekends just to get a seat, but don't worry, the food flies out the small service window at the center of the sit-down counter.
Milk shakes are the real spindled kind with one mixmaster and one other three spindle brand there to make them thick and cold. We have to go back to try one or two.
You can find fancier, not far away is the famous Frida and Wilma's, and lord knows how good they are. You can certainly find more expensive, this is Palm Desert. Better, well, this is...
