We decided to give this place a try since we have passed by quite a few times but never stopped. And we are glad we did. This is a small neighborhood bar at the one end of a strip center shopping area. The signage is easy enough to notice from the street.
The staff is very welcoming and friendly. On this Saturday evening, we had Karen & Megan for servers and were just great. Even though it was our first time there, they made us feel like we were long-time customers. The drinks were good and stiff, so you get what you pay for. We ordered tall ones on the second round just to water it down a bit. But for sure, that is no knock on them.
The decor in this place is grudge meets Cheers with lots of little framed sayings on the walls which were entertaining to say the least. Lots of TVs for watching sports or whatever, and old rock playing on the jukebox in the background.
Now, as far as the food goes, there was pretty good menu selection with some specials of the day thrown in. We had spring roll appetizer, which had a bbq sweet & sour dipping sauce to go with it, which paired just right with the 5 spring rolls. Then we had a shrimp basket and an Italian burger. The shrimp was a really good size, deep fried, and crunchy. The Italian burger came on a hoagy roll with 2 burgers, salami, and provolone. It had a good taste and was a good size for the price. But the burgers were cooked a little too much for my taste. And the fries were slightly too crispy as well.
But don't let that deter you, because all in all this was a great little find with a very good experience for us. We will be back again very...
Read moreIf I could rate my experience with Tavern on 42 a 0/5 I would. There were a total of 8 people at the bar (my table had 3 of them). We ordered 1 cheeseburger with everything on it with a side of fries, 1 bbq burger with a side of chips, and a small pepperoni pizza. Not a crazy order. After 45 minutes, we hadn't gotten our food and had to leave. The server was in tears and apologized repeatedly. I told her, "I get it. I would never blame a server for an issue in the kitchen."
My wife decided to wait for 10 MORE minutes and finally got our food to go. The cook told her, "sorry, but I wanted to make sure everything was perfect." Well, it wasn't perfect...at all. The bbq burger didn't come with chips and the second burger was literally a piece of meat on a bun...nothing on it. Not even a ketchup packet at the very least!
The server was awesome. No complaints whatsoever. I'm actually embarrassed for the lady since she had to smooth things over for another table as well, thanks to the cook.
I don't know if she (the cook) is related to someone or if Tavern on 42 can't find anyone else because nobody seems to want to work anymore, but I'd close the kitchen completely before I had an incompetent person representing my business.
I've been to Tavern on 42 several times and the food was good in the past...I've even recommended to friends to go there. Not anymore. Until this place un-screws what needs to be unscrewed, I'm not going to...
Read moreThe Tavern on 42, went out with friends for the .42 cent wing night which they were very accommodating for the group we had, Wife ordered BBQ wings, loaded tots, i ordered hot/spicy garlic wings & fried mozzarella sticks.
The loaded tots & cheese sticks came out, the tots were way inedible & over fried which the server was gladly to take back & given us a new batch which came back just the way my wife like them, I on the other hand didn't it tasted too much like Mac & Cheese which I can't stand. Mozzarella sticks were just good like any other good stick. Here comes the wings my wife really enjoyed her wings mine were OK, they said it tasted more "butter than Buffalo sauce" I could taste the Buffalo sauce, on the spicy it wasn't too spicy it had a nice heat kick to it, although the wings were nicely sauced they still had a nice crunch to them...
The server was very attentive to everyone which I think she was the only 1 there besides the bartender. She did the best she could do with that she had always refilling my drink even though it was over half full. What I really loved was how spoken she was about where she was at like if she was coming with hot food she would mention it while passing you out just by taping on your back saying I'm behind you while getting my pop to refill it.
As far as coming back I would but I'm going to patronize another special night, Will try the...
