Been coming here off an on for the last 4 years, usually after an exhausting trip at the next door Indian grocery store - Sabzi Mandi. One of the places where you will not be judged for eating with your hands. Feels like you're in a local dosa shop in India. You order first at the counter before you sit. The taste of the food is generally good, but not always consistent. I've had both hits and misses while ordering the same dish on multiple occasions. But here are a few general notes: Their plain dosas - I feel are a bit too dry and tasteless. So I'd recommend getting the ghee or butter versions - which are more crispy and well, tasty! There are a variety of fillings to choose from. The potato masala (in masala dosas) is good. Chutneys are also well seasoned and fresh. Sambar is self serve, but not that great - quite watery. Apart from dosas, I've tried their Chole Bhature - the bhaturas were a nice balance of soft and crisp, but the chole could be improved upon. Samosa chaat is also good. Papdi chaat was once overloaded with chaat masala and salt, that I had to pick it apart and eat carefully leaving a lot to waste. Someone used a heavy hand, but may not be the same always. Idlis are usually premade and stored in a large plastic container. So if they were just out of the steamer you're lucky, otherwise they would just reheat them in the microwave and they'd taste like old, dry and rubbery idlis. I tend to stay away from them. I once tried their poori bhaaji and it was way too greasy. Once I tried their medu vada and it was perfectly crispy and melt in your mouth, though on another occasion it was stale. Meals are also decent (like you would get from a regular Andhra mess - I assume they're from Andhra/Telengana because they only run Telugu channels on the television). My husband likes their Puliyogare which is served with some fried bhajjis, pappadum and pickle. Oh and never forget to wash it all down with their Madras filter coffee - That just hits the spot! (even if your meal wasn't good!) I never wash my hands after eating here simply because their restroom is the worst I've seen in the US! They could certainly redo the restroom, or at least clean it regularly. I try to eat without soiling my hands too much and just use paper napkins to wipe them after. PS: If you're very picky about cleanliness, this place is not for you!! If you want your authentic South Indian snack fix - you're at the...
Read moreEvery now and then, I have friends that wil pick my brain for great local spots to eat often with a certain food in mind. Recently, a coworker asked where to score a great dosa from. Parsippany is home to many great Indian restaurants, and surprisingly, while I love Indian food, have never ventured into the world of Dosas.
What is a dosa is something many may ask? In the realm of Indian cooking, a dosa is very similar to what we all know as crepes, but stuffed with savory Indian food. No doubt, heard good things about them but just never took the step and order outside of my normal meals.
With that, while I never ate at Sri Ganesh Dosa House-Parsippany, (Located at 209 Littleton Road - Littleton Plaza - Intersection of Littleton Road and Parsippany Blvd.)I have heard good things about this place and offered this location as one location. Granted there are many more places with the boundaries of Parsippany to order these, but this was one location that I've heard about and offered up.
Recently we paid a visit for dosas and we both enjoyed out meals. Going in there, we did not really know what we were ordering, but the staff was helpful in choosing our meals even though we lacked experience and knowledge. With most Indian foods that are made fresh to order, they can be fine tuned to your spice level. I enjoy heat to my meal and ordered accordingly.
The dosas are made to irder and came out piping hot and super fresh. My dosa was stuffed with potoes and onions along with other great additions that made for a tasty meal. My coworkers had potato, onions, chickpeas as well as other great additions that was dialed down on the heat scale and was also served fresh.
Both meals were super tasty and unique. While this dosa house is vegetarian, don't be fooled that it won't make a good meal. Despite it being vegertain, I walked away very satisfied and full.
Not pictured, but a lentil soup ( I beleive it may be called Sambar) often accompanies dosas and they had a pot in the restaurant that was also available and was super...
Read moreFood: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐This restaurant is 45 mins from my house and I don't mind driving an hour and half round trip to have their delicious food. I usually get Mysore Bhonda/Bhaji. They serve 8 bhondas with a small peanut/coconut chutney (you can ask for more) for 11$. Sambar is free to take on the side beside the commercial fridge. Sambar to buy is 8, 16, & 32oz displayed on the wall. Chai is delicious as well, condiments besides the sambar stand.
Service: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had 0 bad service from these guys and I have been coming to them since 2018. Dosas, chais, & vadas are flying through the counters with speedy fast service. There's an old man at the counter involved in his phone, not sure if he is the one that people keep referring to in the reviews, but he was welcoming and directed menu when I was lost (testing them).
Atmosphere: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The only reason I give them 4 stars and not 5 is the lack of vision. The restaurant is absolutely huge with a massive kitchen. Then can do so many things to make it look so authentic and beautiful, however, it looks grim and dull. People come, eat, & go, however, it would be nice to have an aesthetic ambience to the restaurant. There's a beautiful Ganesh altar, but it's kept in the corner which no one can see. Sad that this restaurant is doing much with the ambience. Would love to see some...
