I rarely write reviews online (especially negative ones, which I prefer not to write) but after the EXTREMELY WEIRD situation that took place today demonstrating Sushi Kuu's tacky business practices and horrific customer service, I couldn't NOT share this story with any potential local customers. Our family placed an order for dinner delivery from Sushi Kuu at 6PM today. We ordered a few trays of sushi and a chicken hibachi dinner. While placing the order, we specifically asked for the sushi to be made with brown rice and for it to come with a side of eel sauce. Upon delivery, we tip the delivery driver $10.00 (mentioning this just because it is an important detail for a later portion of the story) As we open the food, ALL of the trays of sushi were WHITE rice. Instead, they sent sides of brown rice (which we were also charged extra for) and none of our sushi orders were even the platters we wanted. We got unfamiliar platters of food we would never order. The eel sauce was forgotten altogether. We called to let them know about the many errors that were made since the orders were not only incorrect but they all had white rice which we couldn't eat anyway. We couldn't eat any of it for dietary reasons, except the chicken hibachi. After calling Sushi Kuu about the error, they agreed to redo the order and asked us to give them back the food from the wrong order. Ok fine, they can have it back if they want it. Around 8:00, our new food arrives, they take back their white rice sushi, give us the second delivery, and refund us a portion from where their errors were made. Fine. In the 2nd revision though, the eel sauce was still omitted.

BUT HERE IS THE WORST PART OF THIS WHOLE ORDEAL. AT 10:00PM, A GUY FROM SUSHI KUU COMES KNOCKING AT OUR DOOR. Late at night while we are trying to recover from the whole headache, he gives us an elaborate recount of the whole exchange from earlier and explains how after all the stuff was collected and redelivered, they were still short $9.00. (Doubtful. While the $10 tip was specifically for the delivery driver, it seemed like bad business to come to an unhappy customer's home at night for $9.00. Sorry but REALLY...? Really?) The employee, on behalf of "the boss", would not leave our house until we paid him the $9.00 (which we paid due to his insistence and because its just 9 freaking dollars) but AT WHAT OTHER RESTAURANT do you GO TO A CUSTOMER'S HOUSE AT NIGHT, AFTER AN EXCHANGE WHERE THE STORE WAS AT FAULT, AND ASK FOR YOUR $9.00.... We were honestly in disbelief. Our family ate at Sushi Kuu often. We were all frequent visitors of Sushi Kuu and after this SHOCKINGLY TERRIBLE experience, Sushi Kuu lost 7...
Read moreLived in Lake Hiawatha for a decade but dined here for the first time the other evening with my girlfriend. Interior was clean and we didn't notice anything that warranted criticism. Waitstaff was OK, but not particularly friendly and a little slow. We ordered three specialty rolls, soup and shared a salad. The rolls were artfully made, the fish was fresh and the soup and salad were good. Although, as my girlfriend and I discussed, the miso soup tasted the same as any sushi restaurant we've ever patronized.
The restaurant was BYOB, so we were able to enjoy some sake which they kindly offered to warm up for us. Incidentally, they said they required reservations, which we made for 7:30 p.m., but when we showed up, the restaurant was empty.
There were no privacy walls between the booths, so we felt like we were in the conversation of the couple next to us. Perhaps most disappointingly, three rolls, two soups and a salad yielded a $60 check and we were both still hungry. The food was good, but the pricing was very high relative to portion size. There are other sushi places in the area that offer better value: included soup and salad and better portions. Sushi Kuu provided a decent experience, but we'll try other places...
Read moreAs a native of Lake Hiawatha, I am very happy to have a high quality sushi restaurant. The food is great! The fish is fresh, the staff is kind, sometimes a little awkward, but that is common in most restaurants with a foreign selection. Their bento box is great! It's better to dine in with the bento box, as you get more for your money. The takeout version of bento, I felt, I didn't get as much.
The sushi is great! The only CON with the sushi, is when I ordered pieces of sushi, they were so big, you couldn't eat it in one bite, and the fish was cold against warm rice. While some people may like that, sushi is not meant to be prepared in this manner. Sushi pieces should always be rolled by hand, so the body temperature, matches the fish and temperature of the rice. It is meant to be eaten in one bite. While some people feel that "more fish for my money" it really affected the taste and texture.
They are still 5 stars to me. Check it out!!...
