I've been to Pop Up Chicken in Bloomington so I was excited for the Peoria location. My partner is gluten free. I saw on Facebook prior to visiting that they answered someone's question about gluten free options. Upon ordering we asked what was gluten free to doublecheck and they brought out an allergen menu to make sure. They even asked if it was an allergy so it really seemed like they knew what they were doing.
The food was delivered and it looked fantastic...only to find that the chicken wings were served directly on top of a piece of bread. I hate to be a difficult customer but sometimes you need to be when it comes to your health. We told the server and they brought out another order a few minutes later only for us to find that the mild naked wings we ordered came tossed in buffalo sauce which was not mentioned on the menu. We thought naked meant any sauce would be on the side. My partner doesn't like buffalo sauce but she thought she'd give it a try and still didn't like it. We asked an employee and they grabbed the manager working that day who stated "We don't have buffalo sauce." I don't know what sauce it was, but it tasted very similar to buffalo sauce and it's not what I would call mild either. They again put in an order for new wings and we finally received it without sauce. The wings were tasty with pop up sauce on the side and my medium OG Sando was good but definitely a lot hotter than the Bloomington location.
Overall the food was good and service was good in the sense that they were willing to quickly put in a replacement order, but it was a little disheartening that it happened in the first place. It would be nice if things were better labeled on the menu especially for those eating gluten free who would need to know if fries and wings are in a separate fryer than any breaded fried foods. Even having the allergen menu on the website and updated regularly would...
Read moreI’d like to start off by saying I’m no professional food critic. But I consider myself a long standing foodie who’s lived in Peoria for over 28 years, and have tried at least 3/4 of the restaurants in this town. I wanted to not enjoy Pop Up when it came here because I knew it had a lot of hype and I wanted to give it a full chance to prove itself. I’ve tried most of their specials as they come out, and even multiple times if I wasn’t satisfied the first. One of those was the lobster roll, I had a pretty lack luster first experience. And even the second wasn’t that great. But when it came back out, I got it once more hoping that it would prove to be as delicious as everyone kept telling me. This time it was. The toasted roll, the soft and slightly tender (but not chewy ) lobster pieces. It was delicious. I also tried their wedge salad with chicken, absolutely amazing. Their white truffle fries, may look like normal fries you’d get from a fast food restaurant with some cheese on top, but the flavor profile from the white truffle was amazing. I was full halfway through my lobster and the salad but still found myself going back for more of those truffle fries.
I will not jump on the hype bandwagon, but I can understand why people love this restaurant. Peoria has nothing else like it. The specials are always by far my favorite, from their butter chicken tacos, to the lobster rolls. I’ll always find time to come get their...
Read moreI got the chicken tenders and cheese curds. I also tried some of the chicken and waffles. The chicken and waffles were really good. The waffle was probably the best i had ever had. Super soft with a strong vanilla taste. It's just perfect. The chicken tenders were not very good. The overwhelming breading on the outside of the chicken was very hard. Somewhat like a crustacean, having a hard armored encasement and all. The lemonade was good, sweet tea was good, and the cake shake or whatever was also good. Everything is crazy expensive, especially for what it was. 57 dollars for 2 people to have subpar meals. That 57 dollars includes the tip. Which I would not have tipped if I had known they were going to be waiting on us. They asked to choose a tipping option, so I tipped them. Then they handed me cups right after I tipped them. Which is not a very morally correct way to run a business. Very long wait, and disorganized. They dont sit you at your table, they assign you a number, and you go find a table yourself. We got number 9, and then halfway our 30-minute wait for the food, we got brought the food for table 9, which was not our food. The people who placed mobile orders had to wait just as long. As the people who had just come in. Its like they didn't start cooking the mobile orders until they were there to pick up their food. Overall,...
