I had a sushi hankering after a hike in West Milford on Saturday, but realized once I got to the trailhead that there literally weren't any sushi places for miles (and really not much of anything up there). I decided to return to civilization for sustenance and realized there WAS a new sushi establishment on my way home here. I'm always a little nervous about trying a business that literally still has "Grand Opening" signs on the premises (I like to let them go through their learning curve without me), but I rolled the dice and it paid off.
Pokestop is located in that chaotic strip mall that houses a Playa Bowls, Marshall's and a supermarket, so when you make the conscious decision to drive over there on a Saturday afternoon, be prepared for a lot of congestion and a bit of searching for a parking spot. I was able to find one a few rows over fairly easily but this is probably the worst aspect of the experience, and an unavoidable one. You don't even sense the chaos though once you walk through the doors. It's nice enough where you can have a sit-down meal in front of the sushi bar/prep area, but it's casual enough where someone a bit dusty from hiking a mountain ridge can get primo service too.
The girl at the counter was exceptionally nice; Pokestop helpfully had a giant menu outside for me to peruse at my leisure (and many potentially customers took advantage of it as well while I was there) so when I came in to order, she enthusiastically cheered my choices. I went with a "normal" salmon avocado roll and an edgy special roll, the Firecracker, featuring salmon, tuna, yellowtail, avocado and spicy mayo. Both were delicious and super fresh. In my experience, sushi places tend to skimp a little on the number of pieces for their higher-end rolls, but not here - it was almost twice as much as the salmon/avocado, with great flavors that complemented each other well. There weren't a ton of customers in there when I showed up, but it was still a pleasant surprise to get my food literally within five minutes or so.
The service was as good as it gets; they may have some work to do behind the scenes as a new establishment that I'm unaware of, but it certainly has nothing to do with their hospitality skillset. The woman I interacted with was great, and when I asked if I could sit outside, spent an extra two minutes cleaning the tables once she saw that they'd accumulated a bit of dust, etc. from their morning cleanup (apologizing profusely and unnecessarily for not cleaning them more recently). The price point was decent for the area as well - the total came to about $26, which is to be expected when you decide to dance with the hardcore rolls.
I'm pleasantly surprised and frankly thrilled to find a quick, very decent sushi place on a stretch of 23 that could use it. One of my all-time favorite sushi establishments is Kenko Sushi in nearby Lincoln Park, but it's out of the way and it's much more difficult to order from them now that they require you to use their problematic app instead of calling. This is a fantastic, convenient...

Read moreWe stopped in for dinner for the first time tonight and it will not be our last! The owner, Teresa, was super friendly and she is a foodie too! She serves high quality fresh sushi on beautifully prepared platters with floral garnishes. We had two rolls and edamame as apps., 3 different Boba with Mango being the favorite followed by the Macha! The dinner portions are huge. We had the Sushi Sashimi Platter, all was fresh and tasty. The Beef Habachi dinner was cooked to a perfect medium and my daughter loved the Chicken Habatchi dinner. Both Habatchi dinners came white rice and stir fried vegetables (broccoli and zucchini) and we added the fried rice and noodles too! Eveything was delish and it's a BYOB! Only being open a few weeks, Teresa is having a "soft opening", which is a great idea when starting out. It's nice to see new cuisine in our area and we look forward to...
