New China Restaurant — Restaurant in Petal

Chinese food is a very personal thing. One man's great meal is another man's bad experience. For me, New China fell towards the bad end of the scale.

The service was friendly and my iced tea stayed topped off. The bar didn't match this experience; food was sparse and cold. I couldn't put my finger on it, but the egg drop soup just tasted... wrong. I don't know if it was the base or the stock, but I found the flavor unfamiliar and unpleasant. The hot and sour soup was the same way.

The General Tso chicken, honey chicken, and sesame chicken were all soft; there was no crispiness left to the skin. The meat itself was mushy. My meal was not too long after normal lunch rush hours, but these felt like they'd been out on the bar since before lunch began.

I'm going to give this location another try, likely during a busier time when the bar is being refreshed more often. As of now it's a choice I'd make only if I'm really craving Chinese and am too tired to drive to the next town...

Our favorite place was closed and we craved Chinese food, so I took my family to New China for dinner thinking the buffet would make it easy for the little ones to try different items. We arrived right at peak dinner time when you’d expect the food to be fresh and well stocked. Much of the food on the buffet appeared like it had been under a heat lamp for hours. The kitchen did bring out fresh food after we sat down but nothing had any taste at all. The soda machine was out of syrup and we were served carbonated water so changed the drink orders to tea and water. We are not picky yet left without eating a full meal. And the total was $43. Always very friendly with excellent service!! I've been eating here for years, since they opened up over 10 years ago & trust me when I say the level of consistency in cleanliness, great food & great service they maintain here is so rare to find all those qualities in one place. It's an every other weekend carry-out dinner favorite of my family's. I have a big family so that's usually a pretty large order. And everytime my order is always ready and waiting for me by the time I've made the 15 min drive to pick it up & they always throw in an order of fried crab rangoons or egg rolls for free!!!
