On a long travel day, you have to eat somewhere. It's a shame that so few places at airports are worth it. Typically, the food is not great and the prices are extortionary. This was confirmed on a recent flight that included a layover in Philadelphia. It was early in the morning, so I was in a breakfast mood, but I was a few time zones off, so I would have settled for anything. Chickie's and Pete's was between concourse D where I had flown in and concourse F where I would catch my next flight. It was a pub style place with a nice bar and food. A sign invited me to sit anywhere and a QR code on the table promised to give me a menu. My phone is allergic to many QR codes, so I had to flag down the waitress and get a real menu. The breakfast options were mostly various sandwiches with meat and scrambled eggs drenched in a cheesy sauce. I think they were supposed to be breakfast versions of Philly Cheese steaks. I ordered the one with bacon. The waitress asked if I wanted fries, which I agreed to. I don;t like to drink when I am travelling, so I had coffee instead of beer. The fries came up first. A giant helping of seasoned fries with cheese sauce for dipping. They were almost painfully salty, but otherwise tasty. The sandwich was a Philly roll, with a trace of bacon buried under more eggs that I could eat and smothered with cheese sauce. The eggs were very plain after all the salt from the fries. The bacon didn't have a chance under all the egg. The roll was fine. There are amazing rolls in Philly, this just wasn't one of them. I ate my fill, leaving plenty of leftovers. The waitress offered me a box, but that was impractical for flying so I passed. Then the bill came… I knew from the menu that I was in for something expensive. Sure enough, it was $35. Not bad for the quantity, but high for the low quality. Then I spotted an item on the check that pissed me off. There was a 3% wages and benefits charge that was not part of the waitress's tip. I don't like these sneaky charges showing up. If you need more money to pay the staff, raise prices. Just do it honestly. The waitress wasn't responsible for the deception, so I left her a tip that I hope her sleazy boss actually...
