TLDR: Overpriced, under-portioned, mediocre quality food.
A friend recommend John's Sushi to me and my GF, the friend and I both agree our favorite hibachi/sushi meal was a place in Huntington Valley, so not far from this place. The friend said this place was on par with or better than that place so we tried it.
I ordered the Chicken Katsu which is under the hibachi and claims it comes with a salad, vegetables and noodles. My GF got the sushi combo with 3 different rolls and a miso soup. It was a Saturday night and takeout.
The price was on par with what I pay at my favorite spot so I felt that was fine expecting the same level of quality and portions. I got neither.
Let me say there is nothing wrong with this food in and of itself. It is OK food. I would never say it is bad, but it certainly is not great either. Food alone I would rate a 3 of 5 stars. Average, decent, food.
The miso soup my GF got was essentially water, there was no substance in it at all. The salad I had was barely half full inside the container and was nearly all lettuce. The chicken was laid on top of a layer of lettuce, which I guess is the vegetables promised because I had no other veggies at all. I also had no noodles and just had a bowl of undercooked, dry white rice on the side.
My GFs sushi came with maybe 6 pieces of ginger for 18 pieces of sushi, how generous of them.
Overall, if a friend says they love this place and are treating you to a free meal, its really not a bad place. If you have to pay the prices they are charging, you might as well search elsewhere and get somewhere with real quality food that also provides more...
Read moreGreat food, fresh ingredients, attractive deals, upscale interior, and plenty of parking.
John's Sushi opened its doors recently and is situated in a remarkable location. The house, completed in 1683, is the oldest surviving historical building in the Fox Chase section of Philadelphia's Northeast. It successively housed the original "Inn", then "Overpeck's & Wright General Merchandise, followed by the Old Dutch Kitchen, Old Brauhaus, Blue Ox Brauhaus, Blue Ox Bistro, and, finally, Hop Angel Brauhaus which went out of business during Covid-19 pandemics.
The food is great, the menu is impressively extensive, and John's Sushi even serves some high-end dishes such as Foie Gras Sushi served with Beluga caviar and edible golden flakes, A5 Japanese Wagyu Nigiri, hard-to-find Uni (sea urchin) rolls, etc. However, the restaurant also offers amazing deals. For example: any 6 regular rolls are offered at $32.95. Considering that some of the regular rolls are priced at $6.90 a piece, you get almost $9 in savings.
The interior is pleasing with most of the tables featuring booth seating allowing for a better private dining experience.
There is plenty of parking in the back (located toward the corner of Offord Street and Burholm Ave).

Read morePretty good. I haven't had the nigiri sushi, but the cooked sushi rolls. I usually avoid raw sushi rolls, especially when I'm trying a sushi place for the first few times. The value for the food you get is nice. I also enjoy the cocktails; sweet, refreshing, and affordable.
I would only say that sometimes, the service feels a bit off. One waitress was friendly and accommodating, but other times I felt like I was a total stranger. But then, I would see them treating others in a more friendly manner. They're not rude per se, just distant. But otherwise, it's usually not too busy for dine-in and at least I don't feel rushed to finish.
This all being said, the 1-star "E Bae" (eBay??) reviewer is sus because: None of their reviews are over 3 stars They selected the option for spending $30-$50, but then say in the review that they spent $80 Who spends $80 at a place they've never been to, consumes the food, and then complains about it...? Don't normal people complain and then either leave or get...
