This is a small but amazing place for “maybe” the BEST Polish food in Philly. 6 tables and a cash register counter, Set up next to a glass door desert and cold beverage refrigerator. Two real deal girls cooking Polish food in a kitchen that could only exist on Allegheny St. in the heart of Little Warsaw. Everything is made when ordered so it takes a few minutes to get dinner. You can actually see them cooking in the back of the house. And it is a HOUSE! With A wrought iron railing staircase leading into the front door. Its North Philly so park where you can! Then watch the Regulars consistently pushing the door closed behind the happy patrons filtering in and out with to-go orders. The food is reminiscent of the best dishes my grandma Stella ever made. Even My ultra finicky mom is a huge fan. We had the meat pirogies with sautéed caramelized onions and extra sour cream. The Potato pancakes are fresh grated and pan fried to perfection. The grilled Kilbasa comes as a dinner or sandwich. Either way, with their spicy mustard this was amazing. We added the chicken livers dinner to try something new and were blown away with this take on the lesser used chicken goodies. An almost stew type dish with onion and aromatics expertly seasoned and plated. We have been back 3 times for the rogies and pancakes and each time added one of their other menu items. From pork knuckle to chicken cutlets, pickle soup, goulash or the homemade golubki (stuffed cabbage rolls in rich tomato sauce). We have never been disappointed. If you’re looking for real Polish food and not up to making grandma Stella’s recipes. This is as good...
Read moreAs a person of Polish descent with classical culinary training, I have to say that “The Dinner House” is, by far, my favorite Polish restaurant in the city. I’m not exactly sure what the commenters who left poor reviews are alluding to, as the flavor profiles presented at DH are as authentically Polish as one can get. Having personally tried many of the offerings on the menu, I have yet to be disappointed in the quality of food or the sizes of portions given. Contrariwise, I always leave with a full stomach and a warm feeling in my heart.
That aside, the atmosphere of DH is permeated with “Grandma’s House” vibes- comfort, comfort, comfort. The owner is about as sweet as one can get, always making sure that we have a pleasant experience. Last night, as my mother, my husband, and myself were here for dinner, the owner noticed that one of my mother’s pierogi had broken (not that this was at all noticeable). Without missing a beat she said, “I am so sorry, I break one of your pierogi. I will make you another.” Naturally my mother declined her offer, but the fact that she offered to replace the pierogi in the first place is a refreshing testament to the soul of this place- love, food, and good memories.
If you are looking for a feeling of home- presented in the form of authentic Polish cuisine, served by a woman whose passion shines through in her every word and grin, go to The Dinner House. Restaurants like this one are a rare breed today. You will not be...
Read morePicked up my food around 6:30 pm today.. Breaded pork chops- dry.(Reheated in the microwave) Red beats- Delish! Potatoes- Typical polish mash potatoes. - Good Meat Pierogi. Delicious! Highly recommended. Pickle soup. I ordered pickled soup and received White Barszcz with 2 bits of bacon, 2 potato cubes, and a slice of kielbasa. Egg was missing, which is a primary ingredient in white Barszcz. White Barszcz, could not finish it. Not so tasty. ----My husband and I drove 30 minutes one way and expected fresh food knowing we would have to reheat it in the oven. Here is a thing, if you have left overs from the entire day, do not advise at the arrival and charge a full price. ( When I heard that, it did not register until I put the food on the plate) Being Polish myself, cooking same food, I definitely know the way Polish food should taste, look, and know when it's microwave reheated. My husband who is American stated "your pork chops- are so delish, this does not compare." Although, the taste of pork chop was ok. This review is based on what I was given today, which is disappointing as both of us were very excited, especially since we were busy all day and I didn't have the chance to cook. I should say that the older couple that I presume own the restaurant were very nice. 5 stars for the...
