We've given this place a try twice and were disappointed both times. The first time was during the summer and they appeared to be short-staffed and were out of a lot of items and were limited on what they were able to make. There was no signage outside the restaurant, just our server telling us once we sat down. My boyfriend said his burrito was a lackluster, smaller in comparison to others he's purchased of the same price. I also remember my kids were not a big fan of their food choices. Only 3 kinds of pancakes and like 3crepes, no french toast available.
My boyfriend and I decided to come without the kids this time and give it a try ourselves now that it's been a few months. We came about 25 minutes before close on a weekday and was told so when we first walked in. I'm not used to that but that's fine, just giving us a warning that we can't hang out long. I'm guessing this place is somewhere locals sometimes hang out. We ordered our food and when it arrived, my boyfriend's was incorrect. This is probably due to the server not writing our order down. I asked for salt and pepper and when he brought that over he could visibly see that my boyfriend was digging through his burrito but didn't bother to ask if anything was wrong like most other places we've been to would. Instead, my boyfriend just pushed his plate to the edge of the table as I quickly tried to finish my food so we could leave. When he finally came back and we told him what was wrong, he lacked being apologetic or caring, as if he only cares about a paycheck. I finished my food and paid and on the way out the same woman who told us we were close to close on the way in said she apologized for our food being incorrect. If she was truly sorry about it, she would have visited our table and apologize, not stood at the front the whole time when there was only one other table in the whole restaurant.
Very poor customer service. Will definitely not be coming back. My omelette itself wasn't bad, but we've given it 2 tries now and this will NOT be our new local spot for sure. Considering the prices, the portions you get are not worth it unless you're a true Ahwatukee person making Ahwatukee money. I would try a different place...
Read moreWe have been trying to give these guys chance after chance for years! No More! Tonight was the last straw. Every single time we have tried to eat here, there has been some issue from the food to the service. It's Saturday night at 7:00 pm and they have about 12 tables. Nello's across the parking lot is mobbed with patrons waiting outside. Umm, what's wrong with this picture?
Tonight, we came in and were seated right away but it took awhile for our server to get to us. She came and took our drink order then left again. She came back with the drinks and took our order. We ordered the Grazing Platter with 3 items. We were pretty disappointed with the quality of the meats and cheeses on the platter.
Our food came and the server dumped our plates down and didn't even bother to pick up the dishes and so forth from our appetizer. Then my husband looked at his Croque Madame. His over easy egg looked like rubber and was so overcooked it the yoke was solid. The sandwich was charred on the edges and pretty much inedible. We tried for 15 minutes to get someone's attention, including calling out "excuse me" and we were ignored. When we finally got her attention and my husband let her have it, he didn't ask her to take the food away because he was starving and had decided to make due. She took the food without asking, my husband having said he didn't want anything else. She left him with a tiny cup of berries. He refused to take half of my burger until I said I was full. Which I did on purpose so he had something to eat.
We saw her go talk to the manager, who incidentally was expediting and the one who let the food go out in the first place, and heaven knows what was said, but he obviously didn't want to be bothered.
She finally came back - 10 minutes minutes later - and we asked for the check. She got no tip and a note on the bottom of...
Read moreAdvice to the manager of Hillside Spot. I ate at your restaurant today and have a few suggestions to improve the experience. First, waiters and waitresses should always ask their customers if there is anything else that they need when delivering their orders. I ordered a carne asada torta that didn’t include salsa either on it or on the side. Our food was delivered by other staff, and our waiter never returned to our table to check on us until the very end of the meal. I was unable to get one of the other staff’s attention and finally had to walk up to the kitchen staff and request salsa, which they promptly gave me. Second, your waiters and waitresses should always check on how their guests are enjoying their meals. Almost half of the meat in my carne asada torta was badly burned which ruined the flavor. I tried picking the really bad pieces out of the sandwich as I had waited too long trying to get the salsa that it was too late to send it back as most of my party were finishing their meals. This could have been avoided if you had a second set of eyes on every dish leaving your kitchen. I left with a bad taste in my mouth and was glad that I had an extra mint in my pocket. I have always enjoyed eating at Hillside Spot as the they have a number of great options on the menu for both breakfast and lunch, however, this is not the first time I have gotten a bad meal and poor service. They did appear to be busy and our waiter appeared to be many handling tables all over the restaurant both inside and out, so maybe if they did a better job of staffing and managing staff, the quality of the food and the experience would improve, so I am not giving up on Hillside Spot just yet as I have had a lot of great meals there...
