If I had to summarize Matt’s Big Breakfast in one word, it would be; underwhelming. I first saw this place while on a layover flight to Ontario, CA. I didn’t have time to stop while on the way, but it looked good and I knew I’d get the chance to try it on my layover for my return flight. Myself and several others stood in line waiting to be seated about 10 minutes. The the waitress then came over and asked us all how many were in each of our parties and got us seated. Service was less than hospitable, it’s more of a what do you want, give you your check and you’re on your way. Which is fine, but the waitress didn’t even bring me my drink, once I got my drink I never got a refill, and other than taking my order and bringing coffee and water after I asked her I never saw her again. This could be because they were understaffed as well, but friendly service is always a plus. I ordered the pancakes, coffee and side of bacon, came out to $27. To be expected at the airport, the kicker though, was that they charge for extra syrup…. Which leads me to the food - the people sitting next to me warned me not to order the sausage because it was dry. So I got bacon instead, which looked appetizing- but was quite the opposite as it was severely over peppered. The pancakes (griddlecakes) were chalky and dry. Kudos to those who finish them without extra syrup. Overall, if you’re like me and craving breakfast before or in between flights, it may be in your benefit to skip Matt ‘s Breakfast and wait till you get to your destination. It may save you time and money. The one plus however, was the atmosphere - the tv’s bar and seating is comfortable and a place to hang out in between flights. The couple and lady sitting next to me were friendly.

Had a 2 hour layover in Phoenix on my way to Tucson and saw this breakfast spot popping at around 10am. Line had about 10 people in it, but I thought I'd bypass by sitting at the bar. No deal. This isn't like other spots where the bar is open seating. The servers said I had to wait in line to get a seat at the bar. I was kind of Irk'd because I saw a lone seat in the corner that was empty and the people in front of me were all families of 3+ waiting for tables. I knew I could slip in no problem. But, you gotta play by the rules. After about a 10 minute wait, I was in front and the lady pointed to a seat at the bar around the corner, I said sure, and then she hit me with the "Or you can take that seat," pointing to the seat I had been eyeing the past 10 minutes. All that aside, they were busy so maybe sticking to a script wasn't such a bad idea, and I won't knock 'em for it. But when I sat down, a lady said, "You gotta wait in line" and I had to explain to her that the other lady told me to sit here. I get it, it's busy, but either communicate better or trust the process. After that, service was phenomenal. Alcohol is averagely priced for an airport. Bloody Mary was decent. All those fixings and bacon can't really save a bad base, but they helped. The breakfast sandwich is probably one of the best I've had in all of my breakfast sandwich endeavors. Runny egg thick bacon. Although the potatoes were on par with some of the worst I've had, I was overall satisfied with the meal. The whole server/QR Code thing is a little confusing. Am I ordering through you, or this code on my phone. 🤷

They charge you for fries. The fries sit in a bowl under the heat lamp; I’ve sat here now for 45 min and that bowl hasn’t been refreshed…they are cold and mushy. They try to cover this with some Trader Joe’s ‘everything bagel sprinkle’ thinking the rock salt and spice will trick your brain into thinking it’s good, even tho it’s stone cold. I had to ask for fresh ones, for what they charge $3.50 on top of a $14 burger, I shouldn’t have to ask for fresh fries for $20+. And they have deep fryers on display, but the fries come from the back room…why? Then…get this…they have their ‘kitchen’ on full display. They are plating on top of their stacks of dishes. Like 20 plates stacked, they are playing their food on top of all 20. All the normal kitchen stuffs spilling on all the plates below. Vegetarians beware. The place reeks of laziness and an inattentive owner. I was here at 2:30 on a Thursday. This wasn’t a result of time of day or anything else. Place was half full (at best); pic below. They even warned someone who decided to not sit at the bar: “there’s only one waiter out there at the tables”…yikes. Plain and simple. Absent owners. All you need to know is the Toaster faces FOH staff. This tells you the owners have never worked the line or as servers. They expect their bar staff to toast off their breakfast breads after an order is up. Which means late, cold or never arrived bread with breakfast. Amateur hour all around. Go elsewhere. And it’s FREEZING COLD at their bar. All downdrafts point at edges of bar. If you couldn’t tell, this place just falls short everywhere.

Terrible. We (6 people total, 4 people ate) came in about 6am for a 4 hour lay over from an 6 hr flight. When we got there we were sat within a couple of minutes. There was a bartender and one server on the floor; she had a 6 top and a top when we got sat. We sat for about 5-7 mins until she came over and asked for drinks and then stood there waiting for our food order. She did t ask if we were ready but just stood there, I said “oh you’re ready”, she replied with “yeah I’m kinda busy”. We ordered; big breakfast, burrito with sausage, burrito with bacon, pancakes, and a side of additional potatoes. One person decided to change his order bc he saw something that he liked more (he ordered rushed) so he immediately walked over to her and said he wanted to change his burrito with bacon to another dish. She replied “I already put it in” and then canceled the whole order to come back and retake our orders with the change. She repeated back what we ordered and she didn’t repeat the pancakes. I asked “oh I didn’t hear the pancakes did you get them” (my husband ordered them), her response “he never ordered the pancakes”, my response “he did, he said pancakes not griddlecakes”, and she tried to argue back again saying “no he didn’t”. I reordered them. We got our food, my sausage was very dry and tasteless, my nephew said his burrito was “alright”, the pancakes were fine. When the server brought the pancakes over she asked if my husband wanted more syrup, he said yes. She never brought it, we asked another person, didn’t bring it, again we asked our server and then finally we just got up and went over to her to get it. We got our bill and there was automatic gratuity added, 20%. The menu nor the server told us about this) One person complained about the gratuity since only 4 ate and the service was horrible, she basically said too bad and she was busy. Not an apology for her attitude or having to deal with such horrible service. We had split checks, the other party paid online and accidentally paid for my check (I didn’t know until I asked about the difference). When I mentioned it to her the server said “oh it’s only a dollar anyways”. Which isn’t the point. I’ll never go to another Matt’s anywhere. The food is subpar for the price and service...

Update 9/8/2025 I stand by my original review below. But I did want to add a lunch review. Had the Mamacita burger today. Great burger. Well cooked. Highly recommend it. I will up the food rating from 3 to 4 stars. I'll bump the service to 3 - the very busy waitress held up well in spite of being understaffed. Also, it took 30 MINUTES to simply get me my burger, and they were moderately busy - not crammed. So, great burger, but if you are short on time - go somewhere else.

The airport has a definite lack of good restaurants that can serve good traditional food - which is why I stopped here for a very late breakfast between flights. They focus on breakfast, only use butter and olive oil, so what can go wrong? I got the big breakfast. Asked for eggs over easy and he said that it came with sourdough toast - and I confirmed it was "real", not the fake garbage you get nowadays, and he said it really was. Welllll, evidently they still can't quite get it right. My eggs were, let's say, over difficult. One side hard, one side still liquidy (if that's a word), but at least edible. He shows up with a pancake and says "oh, it comes with pancake not toast" and then walks away. I don't eat basic pancakes - processed white flour, ick. So, no offer to replace it or to even come out of the kitchen with it in the first place. Come on, pancakes, a piece of toast - cost virtually nothing, but was important to me as I made clear to the server. Then, the potatoes were cooked to the point where some pieces were inedible they were so hard from being overcooked. But wait, there's more. My server took a break and the lady who was in training who took over simply ignored me. After about 15 minutes after I finished eating, I just got up and started looking around for someone to pay. Then he shows up again. Very disappointing and I hope management reads this. Three stars borderline, but perhaps...
