Really, really not good. Was in the mood for some basic, crappy Chinese food. You know- the fried kind with orange sweat and sour sauce... so, I wasn’t seeking a high quality meal. Sometimes, we just want what we want, ya know? This place took crappy to a new level, though. Ordered the crab Rangoon. Picked up a piece and broke it in half and brown liquid squirted out onto the plate. It was oil. Like the kind it was fried in. Brown. Looking at the plate they were served on, there was a puddle of brown oil where the first Rangoon had been. I lifted the others and there were just puddles and puddles of the brown oil. I took them off the plate and put them on my linen to soak up the excess oil. It was disturbing seeing the large spots of brown oil stain the napkin. So, that’s the first thing; it seems they don’t change their frying oil almost ever. I had also ordered sweet and sour chicken. This was another disastrous dish. I fully expected to be eating deep fried food smothered in an unnatural sauce. I had no delusions of grandeur with what I ordered. But god almighty, this was terrible. Besides the obviously gross oil it had been fried it, the chicken was battered (with idk what) so thickly that honestly only 25% of each piece was chicken and the rest was breading. The breading was so thick and heavy that cutting into a piece of “chicken” resulted in the breading falling away from the bite. It simply wouldn’t stay attached to the tiny piece of chicken inside. It was honestly gross. I said from the beginning I wasn’t going for gourmet food. But this was beyond the pale disgusting. The restaurant is HUGE and was dead empty at 6 pm. We were the only people there. There’s a reason for that. I am writing this at 2 am because I’ve had stomach issues the past hour. I was woken with cramping and the need to hit the bathroom several times now. Maybe it is because of the food. Maybe not. I forced down 2 pieces of Rangoon and less than a quarter of the chicken. I simply couldn’t stomach having more. Anyway- bottom line is: don’t go. Even if you think your standards are low, this place will surprise you by showing you how much...
Read moreI’ll admit it…Wan Fu caught my eye before I even knew what was on the menu. That pagoda-style roof and bold red front doors flanked by lion statues had me pulling into the parking lot on pure vibe alone. The place just looks like it’s got stories to tell.
Chef Chan has been serving Chinese food in Charlotte since 1989, and stepping inside Wan Fu feels like entering a time capsule. It’s lined with red leather booths, carved wood partitions, glowing amber lanterns, and a massive golden dragon mural that practically breathes fire from the wall. It’s got that classic, cozy feel without trying too hard. Think vintage elegance with a side of soy sauce.
I came with a craving for Beef Chow Fun and it absolutely delivered. The portion was massive, like “leftovers for tomorrow” big. Thin flat rice noodles stir fried with tender slices of beef, sweet onions, crunchy bean sprouts, snow peas, and scallions. It was savory, chewy, and exactly the comfort food fix I needed.
To start, I kept it classic with a vegetable spring roll. It came out fresh from the fryer, golden and crisp, and paired with duck sauce and spicy mustard for that nostalgic Chinese takeout flavor. Inside was your usual cabbage and carrot filling, nothing fancy but perfectly executed.
The wonton soup was next. The broth was clear, light, and flavorful. Salty, but not the salt bomb you get at some spots. The wontons were delicate and filled with pork, and they didn’t skimp on them either. A solid option if you’re easing into the meal.
Service was friendly and warm. The kind of place where you feel like a regular even on your...
