How to describe these delicious unique tasty treats??? Let me start by saying I'm a bit of a "junk food junky." anyone who knows me, knows I live on sweets, sugar and caffeine.. Lol. Moved to Elliott few years back and started hearing about better maids donuts. I've NEVER been a morning person so for me to get up early enough to try these is a miracle in itself. My first encounter was actually with the owner of this place as I was new to area, waiting for a bus in pouring rain. He saw me waiting, getting drenched and was nice enough to offer me a ride in to the store. Then I found out he was "the donut man. " finally after a few months the stars aligned enough for me to make it in while they're open. Not only is the owner a genuinely kind human being but he makes the BEST yummiest donuts I've ever tasted. The blueberry is a favorite of mine. The blueberry tastes so fresh and like eating real blueberries off the bush. Without being overpowered by the donut itself. They have perfect amount of "crunch" in the crust with a soft cake texture. Chocolate coconut close second. All of them though aren't overpowering sweet, or sugary. An exact perfect formula of sweet, sugar, cake and fillings. I'm also not a fan of cake or cake type donuts but geesh these things are beyond good. So good, in fact, that it's worth the wait, worth taking a chance of them not being open, etc. Just to grab some for the day! I doubt I'll ever find any donuts that can beat these! And the pricing can't be beat either... Half dozen for under $5! So if you do get lucky enough to grab some, and you want them to last a few days store them in a lidded container and it'll keep them nice and...

But hey, when I get off a plane from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh at 5am and have on my schedule to come to Better-Maid by 6am so as to be in line and not miss out on the donuts, which seem to sell out quickly (source: The Internet), I am admittedly looking forward to said donuts. Unfortunately, this past Saturday, they just... didn't open. On a weekend. I was only in town for the day so I wasn't able to come back. And I waited for about an hour and a half in the semi-darkness (eventually making some friends with those who formed a line at around 7am).
Is there no more efficient way to notify the public? No WiFi equipped sign, no website with daily updates that can indicate whether the establishment will be open that day?
Obviously, whatever they're doing is working since I've heard about this place and was there, so maybe there's just no incentive to make any changes to the process, but I hope the business will consider the feedback...
Read moreNot the best, but one of the best donut places I have tried, and I would think it is most likely the best in the area. If not, why would people drive 15 minutes to a half hour to get there, and then wait in line HOPING they get some donuts?
It is a small hole-in-the-wall place, that is run by people that just love making donuts. You need to check online if they are open because they do not have regular hours. And even when they are open they generally sell out quickly. They only make about 80 dozen donuts. And when asked, they said they not sure how many donut holes they make as well.
Most of their filled donuts have a decent amount of filling. One or two of the donuts we bought could have had a drop more, but that was the exception.
Although I usually am a yeast donut person, I preferred their cake donuts, which were very flavorful and satisfying. Overall, you can't go wrong with...
