I LOVE Jak's baked goods! The halva (sesame fudge) kifla is my absolute favorite: sweet yeasted dough filled with melty halva and covered in sesame seeds. It happens to be vegan and there are several other vegan options: the tutmanik (sun-dried tomatoes, olives, garlic), pogacha (like if syrupy walnut baklava and cake had a baby), & pumpkin banitsa (handmade phyllo filled with butternut squash and walnuts). My kids could probably subsist entirely on the banitsa (handmade phyllo dough stuffed with feta cheese and egg) and the chocolate kifla (sweet yeasted dough filled with nutella). The kozonak (sweet yeasted bread studded with raisins and candied orange peel and topped with almonds) makes truly awesome french toast. Find Jak at a market near you!

I must admit, I was completely clueless about halva before trying Jaks Bakery's version. My initial question, "Is it just bread?" was met with a friendly smile and a resounding "No!" I was blown away by the flavor. The halva was a delightful blend of sweet, with subtle hints of orange and lemon. But the real surprise was inside: a delicious sesame type fudge! I'm so glad I stumbled upon Jaks Bakery at the Sewickley farmers market. Plus they're only 15 minutes away from me in Bloomfield, I can't wait to try everything they offer! Thank you for bringing your Bulgarian recipes to Pittsburgh, we're lucky to have you!!
