This is one of my favorite Indian restaurants in Pittsburgh, up there with Salem's (which could be viewed as Middle Eastern, but nonetheless have Indian items as well). To start, the nan is great. Not overly buttery, the right amount of flakiness/thickness, and great size of 2 pieces per order. The appetizer platter is fantastic as well. For $7, you get 2 spinach pakoras, 2 cauliflower pakoras, 2 aloo tikki, and a samosa. It's a great value.
Everything was crispy and not overly greasy. Samosa was larger than at any other Indian restaurant and had a great shell and filling. For my entree, I got the Chana masala. However, I modified it to have no onions. When we arrived at the restaurant, I realized that the restaurant worker had called me to ask about the request. He let me know that all the sauces are made with onions but he could omit the chopped onion in the dish. This is what I wanted and everything turned out well, he handled the situation professionally. The chickpeas themselves tasted great, not too spicy as I got a mild. Also, there was no buildup of oil at the top of the bowl. It was a big portion of curry and came with an equally huge portion of rice!
Finally, for dessert I got a mango bahaar. This is an Indian ice cream and it was a bit small but tasted fine. It was not my favorite dessert but besides that, this place is great (tasty food, great portions,...
Read moreTaste of India is delicious food and extremely polite and helpful service for VERY reasonable prices. Lunch buffet is an especially good deal ($7.95 for all you can eat, with a drink included!). I've heard people say that the place has trouble attracting customers because the outside is not very flashy, but they're renovating now, so hopefully more people will discover it. Though the newly renovated inside of the restaurant is beautiful, classy and comfortable, it's totally acceptable to come casually dressed. (People visiting children at Children's Hospital across the street eat there pretty often, I think.) Everyone I've ever taken with me or recommended the place to has loved it. The restaurant accommodates comfortably large and small parties alike. It's always clean and the employees are always very kind and professional. I've been a loyal customer for years now (and a poor college student), and they never let me leave without giving free drinks or desserts to me or the whole party if it's not too big. They're too kind! I wish them many kind...
Read moreBest Indian Restaurant in Pittsburgh. I've been to ALL of them, multiple times at different hours all in the past month to see for real, which is the best Indian restaurant... This is it. Though the menu is limited, the space humble, and the flavors simple, the food itself is high quality, and the preparation is careful; it is not fancy, but does not over-complicate the food or use excess grease or cream. The flavors of the ingredients shine, the flavor is home-cooked and comforting, and you feel good after finishing your meal! Above all, the staff at this restaurant are the best of any. They serve you with a smile, are not intrusive, and yet not negligent either. They will also go above all other places to serve your needs, whether that is an accommodation for a special sauce, or what have you. To top it all off, they are the least expensive of any in the area, and the resulting value is the best bang for your buck in the city!
I am now loyal to Taste of India, and it will be my go-to for eating out...
