My five stars is based on multiple factors, not just the food: Novelty: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Atmosphere: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Drinks: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sweets: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Food/savories: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Update 2024-02-16: Just saw the owner's response and thought I'd update my review. This is still a favorite hangout. It can be kinda packed at times, but it's usually not hard to get a table to yourself. I upgraded the sweets section above from four stars to five stars, because what was I thinking giving it four stars? There are so many different sweets to try, and they're all pretty good. Of course, I'm a sucker for anything with mochi in it. Or custard. (they have both)
It can be a little noisy/boisterous at times, but not terribly so. I mean, it's a cafe, not a library ;) Also, they're open pretty late (usually around 10pm), later than your average coffee shop, so if you need to have a place to chill out and read/study/whatever, it's great for that.
Definitely try the spicy chicken nuggets and/or the sweet potato fries. The service is pretty friendly and they helped me find non-sugared milk tea options when I was there last time (diet, lol). I still wouldn't consider it for a place to get a full meal if you're really hungry, but if you want some snacks, there are some amazing options, and there's definitely good stuff there for a light meal. Also important to me, they have sweets that aren't super-duper sweet like typical North American desserts — You know the kind; you bite down on a piece of cake and instantly get four cavities and a diabetes warning from your doctor 😆. I'm sure they have some sweeter desserts for typical North American palates, but most of the things I tried were quite moderate in sweetness and flavorful, rather than just being a huge sugar rush.
P.S., hey Sweet Hut, any possibility of getting Jiggly Cake on the menu some time? ;)
They have very good smoothies and teas. The place itself is very nice and clean, and has lots of room. The novelty value is very high, because there aren't many Asian pastry/sweets shops around here. As far as the sweet buns go, some are amazing, many are good, some are so-so. I'm sure that tastes vary widely, and this isn't food that I've grown up eating, so I'll withhold naming the ones I do and don't like, except to mention that the sweet bean and mochi bun is pretty amazing. The savory buns are ok. Mostly, they're kolache-style stuffed buns. Decent food, but I'd rather eat dinner elsewhere and come here for dessert.
Overall, I'm very glad to have been introduced to this place. 😉
EDIT: The food/savories got upgraded to four stars. It's still not a restaurant-restaurant, but I've had dinner here several times, and it's quite good. This is one of my FAVORITE hangouts, and I come here darn near as...
Read moreSweet Hut used to be better. When they first opened the cakes and pastries were pretty good. The sponge cake used in the cakes were light and fluffy, and the cream used in the cakes were light, creamy, and perfectly sweetened. Now the cakes have the taste and texture of kitchen sponges and the cream tastes oily, not like real cream. In the beginning we've had the fruit cake, Oreo cheesecake, and various pastries. They were good back then. A couple of months ago we had the lychee cake, Oreo cheesecake, opera cake, and strawberry cake. It wasn't as good as the first time we had it. The cream had a different consistency and tasted oily. The cakes also tasted dry and stale. Just recently in May we went with friends and got a fruit cake, tiramisu, and chocolate cream puff. The cream inside the puff wasn't even custard but oily whipped cream. Worse than the can you buy at the grocery store. The fruit cake tasted like what I imagined what a Scotch Brite yellow sponge would taste like topped with fake oily cream. What happened to this place? It almost seems like the cakes got replaced with artificial cakes that are for display, that's how bad it tastes now. This place used to be good, but seems like they decided to go cheap with their ingredients. Sweet Hut started out with good cakes but now the quality has diminished for sure. The one thing it has going for them is that it's busy, it seems like a nice place to hang out. We always see a lot of college kids hanging out. It's nice to sit and chat with your friends, but just don't...
Read moreI placed an order for delivery from Sweet Hut as my daughter wanted to surprise her teachers with a treat before Winter Break. Imagine my daughter’s surprise when the items (milk tea with boba, slush wish boba, sea salt coffee, Oreo Mousse Slice, & Lychee Mascarpone Slice) all arrived with no straws and no utensils. How one is expected to drink boba without boba straws is beyond me.
I called Sweet Hut immediately and explained the situation to their on-duty manager who identified himself and gave me his name. He proceeded to apologize 2-3 times while offering no solutions for the predicament caused by one of his employees. Then, when I asked him what he was going to do, he began telling me how he couldn’t refund me, he couldn’t get me straws and utensils, I directed the young (least he sounded and came across young) man to stop telling me what he cannot do, and tell me what he can.
At this point I’m quite frustrated. Instead of offering some type of solution, he replied, “Well what do you want me to do?” I said, “You’re the manager. I’ve called and explained the situation caused by your employee. I expect you to fix it.”
His told me he can’t do anything.
I like the food and beverages from Sweet Hut. I typically support many Asian and Taiwanese restaurants. But this type of service is not what I will spend money on ever again. Frustratingly...
