Los Amigos has been in this location in Cumberland Square for what feels like decades. I've been to all the places surrounding it - the Pizza Hut, Culver's, Happy Joes...I mean, I remember when there was a Fazoli's, Hollywood Video, and a Hardee's around here. But I never tried Los Amigos in my formative years. I've had a mind to give it a try, and tonight was the night.
The weathered sign that seemed only half lit on the exterior dampened my spirits slightly. The place looks fine during the day, really, just like any of the other locations in this shopping center. Was this an omen for the dining experience to come? Would this Mexican food mirror my misguided first impressions?
Leaving that cliff hanger to sit for a while, I'd mention that the interior is very well kept up, both in cleanliness and architecture. Large ceramic tiles line the entire dining area floor, while a modern drop ceiling with recessed lighting fixtures provide most of the light. The bar has a nice backlight feature behind the liquor bottles, which cycles between red and blue colors periodically. There's four televisions playing sports at the bar area, as well. Other signage with the restaurant's name and decoration on the walls assure that this is indeed a Mexican Restaurant. All of this makes sense - I like it.
As per my usual routine, I opted to sit at the bar to dine alone. I quickly had a menu and water placed before me and I quickly placed my order - two enchiladas and a taco with rice and beans. I had my food within 15 minutes, which I tucked into quickly (I was a hungry guy tonight). The enchiladas were okay - different than what I was used to. They only had melted cheese on the top, in addition to the normal lettuce and tomato. I'm used to a bit of red or mole sauce that other places tend to have in between the tortilla and cheese, but these tasted fine. The tortilla was tender, the meat seasoned appropriately - all was well. The taco was similarly acceptable - crunchy, tasty, and what I'd expect from an American-style hard shell taco at a Mexican restaurant. Really, no complaints on either.
Of everything in the meal, I honestly think I liked the chips and salsa the most. The chips were standard, but the salsa was a stand-out from other appetizer grades served at local Mexican restaurants. I can't explain it, but this was better than I'd had from most other places recently. Not spicy, just flavorful and smooth.
I enjoyed the meal overall - it was a solid plate of enchiladas and taco, with good rice and beans as well. Thanks Los Amigos, perhaps I will see you again...

Read moreI didn't want a watery, white cheese sauce that I can buy from the store in a jar, so I specifically asked if the Queso Fundido was made with Chihauhau cheese. The server told me it was. It was not. I was served a very watery white cheese sauce, not Queso Fundido. I could have purchased this at a grocery store in a Frito Lay jar. Very disappointed. When I asked the server why he had misinformed me, he told me he didn't know what I said because he can't understand English. That's fine except when I asked specifically if the Queso Fundido was made with Chihauhau cheese, he said, yes. If you don't understand, please ask someone who does. Don't misinform customers.
The salsa was okay. Very bland. The steak tacos, also okay. Not much...
