I've lived in Salt Lake City for 9 years and have tried dozens of "the best" Mexican restaurants in the SLC area, as well as countless taco trucks/trailers. I can honestly say that I have yet to find an asada taco in SLC that I enjoy more than the ones at El Herradero in Pocatello. Their salsa verde is great, beans are good, and I'm addicted to their pickled carrots and jalapenos; even those are hard to beat in SLC. Somehow, even their bean and cheese burritos are great; something that normally tastes bland and dry to me, but not here. It's definitely a hole-in-the-wall, but the food is good and the prices are very reasonable. A frequent stop when we're in town.
Update 4 years later:
We've since moved back to Pocatello and have been going to this El Herradero almost weekly for the last 2 years. I've never been a "regular" somewhere, but this would be the only place I'd ever consider myself a regular; they know us when we walk in. In the last 4 years the food has always been fantastic, and the service has always been excellent and very friendly. We have eaten here well over 100 times and have never had one bad meal.
Just note that authentic Mexican service is culturally different than what many might be used to. Here, you often seat yourself, and when you're ready to pay, they don't tend to bring you a check. When you're done eating, simply walk up to the register and they'll take care of you. It's a system that works well, but it's worth noting since it's a little unconventional for what many might be used to. Don't mistake the different approach as poor service; it's not, it's...
Read moreWe came here after seeing all of the good reviews. Initially when we got there the place was dirty and windows cracked. Bathrooms were particularly nasty. Ok, so we figured this place was just a hidden gem dive with awesome food. Service was almost the worst we have had. Nobody greeted us. Server kind of yelled for us to sit at a table which was all pushed around presumably for sweeping. We pushed it back and sat. The waitress threw menus on the table 5 minutes later without a word. Every time she interacted with us it was as if we were a pain. We had to practically beg for an extra plate, refill on water, etc. we always said please and thank you, but she always just walked away. Like I said, if the food was amazing I would not be leaving this review. Most of it was just ok. I have had better and had worse, but along with the service, it was definitely not worth it. However, the carne asada was TERRIBLE!!! We had it in the enchilada and fajitas. It was tiny, and I mean the tiniest, burnt pieces of meat and the whole thing was so salty it was pretty much impalpable. The only redeeming thing was the refried beans. They were actually pretty decent. Prices were reasonable but again definitely not worth the experience. We did see a lot of to-go orders and we know they operate a food truck so maybe they don’t care. It certainty seemed like they could have cared less if...
Read moreLove the Street Tacos! I might have tried a burrito once.... but I'm addicted to the Street Tacos. They aren't very expensive. Their green salsa is really good (and I don't normally like green salsa) and with a bit of lime and cheese on the Street Tacos... omg... Yummm!! You gotta ask for the extra "queso" but my wife and I can eat here for under $30. It's an insanely good value. This place can get busy and be at capacity at times.... but that's a sign they are that good...and the service is really good and your food is up usually pretty fast. Much faster than most sit down restaurants. Really nice family feel to the place. To the gal who is complaining about the lemons she got instead of limes... I'm sorry, I got your limes... I always get limes for the Corona and Street tacos... I haven't seen them run out yet. So blame me. I ate your limes. Local Tip: By the way, some of the folks there are ESL... but know Spanish fluently... so feel free to try to speak Spanish with them or use the Google Translate app on your phone so they understand what you are asking for. First time I was asking for extra cheese and sour cream... my server let me know they didn't know what I was asking for so we worked on our language barrier with smiles on our faces. Now they help me with my Spanish. They are good people! I'm almost ready for a...
