Schooners Grill Poquoson — Restaurant in Poquoson

I was working nearby Googled restaurants near me felt I was in such luck a Schooner's just 2.5 miles from me. Love the one in Newport News. Note that it's not a busy time based on their website. Awesome I arrive 10 people clustered at the bar two tables a 4 top and a deuce. I ask the hostess can I get a quick to go order " sure " I order a Black and Blue Chicken Wrap side spinach salad at 1:52 pm no one else enters no other food is being served. And I'm waiting after 15 minutes I'm trying to find my hostess/server that took my order no where to be seen. At the 20 minute mark she passes me and says it will be right out they are wrapping it up. Again she disappears at 25 after I ask the bartender to find out what the hold up is five minutes ago it was being packaged. The hostess finally comes out with bag telling me she realized they didn't include the lettuce and tomato so she had them add it took an extra minute. I take order now at 2:27pm to my car I need to return to work reach in grab 1/2 the wrap wait no lettuce and tomato in the box? Ummm the wrap is grilled pressed so what ever is inside was unit when it was made like the lettuce and tomato. Now this is supposed to be a Cajun seasoned backed chicken breast with blue cheese well nothing Cajun about this chicken it might of had salt and pepper on it and there was a creamy sauce but it wasn't blue cheese it tasted more like ranch or a poor quality tartar sauce. Add to that there was no napkins in the bag or utensils to eat the spinach salad with I sad to say this not the Schooners you have come to know and love in Newport News save yourself drive the 22 minutes and get the real deal. The only redeeming factor of this visit was the hostess had a smile on her face when she greeted me and when she fabricated the story of having to add lettuce and tomato to my order which caused it to be an additional 7 minutes longer wait. Definitely a work in progress. Appears to be complete chaos in the kitchen. I and my wife, along with son and his wife had a late lunch (2:30 pm). Two orders of Fish and Chips, a Rodeo Burger (medium rare) with fries, and an Old Fashion Burger (well done) with fries. Fifteen minutes after order was placed, the Fish and Chips arrived, both with cold, room temperature fries. It was a cold, rainy day in Poquoson. We expected the burgers to arrive quickly as the server had two hands and left, we thought to bring out the two burgers. We waited for the burgers to arrive so we could all eat together. About 5 minutes later, the waitress said she saw the burgers coming out and they would be there for us shortly. After another 10 minutes (now 30 minutes after the order was placed, the Old Fashion (well done) burger arrived. Except that it was cooked red rare, not well done, and the fries were, well, cold, room temperature fries. In another 10 minutes (now 40 minutes since the order was placed and 25 minutes after the fish and chips arrived) the Rodeo Burger (medium rare) arrived. Except that it was well done, dark brown thru and thru. The fries were hot. The rest of us marveled and were amazed at the idea of hot fries. In defense of the restaurant, the taste of even the cold fries was good. If they ever get their act together, the restaurant might not go out...

I’ll start off by saying the drinks here are very good. Abby is a highly skilled bartender. The Coco Loco (I think that was the name) tasted like a Bahama mama, and was the perfect strength. The food was ok. We got the boom boom shrimp as an appetizer, it was loaded in sauce. Way too much sauce, the shrimp was good though. I will absolutely be trying the souvlaki sticks next time. I made the mistake of ordering a pizza, and it wasn’t bad, but I wouldn’t get one again from here. We sat down about 1.5 hours before close and about 30 minutes before close, we were getting rushed out by our waitress, while there were still plenty people dining inside and a few outside. Would not recommend sitting outside, the bugs were awful, they have tiki torches which may help but they were not working. I will be back, sitting inside, and not getting pizza again!
