American Grill — Restaurant in Port Huron Charter Township

6/8/2023 I have been a long time regular here and today changed that. There once was incredible value eating here amazing food, amazing portions, fair price. They've hiked the prices and reduced the portion sizes. Sandwiches no longer come with fries, they're Ala cart and fewer now. Reuben, fries, and a soda was $17 bucks and change. I can't be the only one finding this displeasing as they were less than half capacity during prime time lunch hours. Service is still top notch and the food tastes the same [great] but sorry American Grill too rich for my blood. It was good while it lasted.

3yrs ago Normally this place is 5 stars however our last visit had some issues. I've never had a bad meal here and normally the service is spot on. Portions are HUGE. Our last visit however the server completely botched our order, we could hear her explain the mistake to the cook making it sound as if it was our fault changing our minds when it was her who failed to take the original order correctly! She failed to take any empty dishes from our table. My food finally came out after 40 minutes [far longer than my normal experience here]. After the mess up of my wife's order we told them just make it to go since it was taking forever. I had completely finished my dinner before her corrected order [just a sandwich] finally arrived [total time 60 mins]. We came in looking for a cheap sit down meal and that's exactly what we got.

The menu is huge with everything from fish and chips to burritos. They have home made soup and deserts. Our waitress was friendly but hovered a lot barely giving us time to open the menu before asking if we were ready to order.

I ordered the pan fried perch and my husband ordered the country fried steak. Both dinners came with soup or salad choice of potato a vegetable and dessert. The portions were really big. The bowls of soup were double what you would normally expect at a diner. The country fried steak came with two large steaks and a big portion of mashed potatoes and the perch came with two average size pieces and one smaller piece. My fish was very greasy for being pan fried and the bottom side of all three pieces were almost burnt. The fish was over done and flavorless and what little breading was on it was falling off because it was so wet. My fries were perfectly cooked. The clam chowder was actually delicious, but overly thick and a little grainy. My husband's steak was cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes were great he said. He enjoyed the chicken noodle soup so much he filled up on that and was only able to eat a couple of bites of his dinner.

The food was decent. It was decently priced and you got a dessert which was putting or ice cream with the meals that we bought. I got the country fried steak.

My wife got the perch. I will say the perch was a little greasy. According to her, the french fries that she got were really good.

The mashed potatoes that I got with the country fried steak were really good. The vegetables however, avoid canned vegetables and if you ordered the broccoli, it's literally just broccoli florets on your plate. No seasoning, no nothing The waitress was nice but a little pushy. We didn't really have time to look at the menu or anything before she came over three times to see if we were ready. She also said that most people know what they want before they sit down. I'm like this is our first time here so no we don't know haha

My wife got to clam chowder. She said it was really good and tasted homemade. She did say it was a little gritty because they used too much cornstarch to thicken it up. I got the chicken noodle soup and it was actually really good and had big chunks of chicken in it

All in all good place to eat quick, easy and not too expensive. It was $31 for both of us to have those meals and like I said we also got pudding...
